Thanks, i'm not at uni yet! That's just my plan because i underachieved with my UAI so i'll have to settle for Arts then hope for a transfer because Ec and Social Sciences is what i was hoping to do. Can anyone give me an estimate of what i need to do to acheive this??

you dont have to be at uni to email him.
I guess I can estimate that a credit avg could get you there. Best email him, he can actually look up what was needed last year for a xfer.

B. Economic and Social Sciences is my second preference if i don't get b. international studies... and it seems like a really great course that i might just stay in and not transfer out of if i start it. i had a friend who didn't do 2u maths and was worried about obviously majoring in economics for b.economics, with the statistical units of study... and whether or not studying b.economic and social sciences would be better. One lecturer in maclaurin hall said something like, when comparing the two degrees, b.economics is more attractive to employees than b.economic and social science simply because it's more specialised... like, with b.economic and social science there are no core units of study? Does that make you more capable to 'construct' your career prospects, or is the degree better intended to be the beginning foundation of further study?

b economic and social sciences is a looser degree than b eco. It is great for honours (as most of the majors that you have to do usually do get a lot of people cotinuing on to further study)

Ok I'm going to enrol in this course on Wednesday and am having trouble understaning the units of study. I've read the handbook a couple times and there seem to be 2 options. If I'm assuming if I choose economics for my first unit then I must do econometrics as my second. If I do this, and then select Government and International Relations for the third, can I choose Political Economy for the fourth unit, which is only listed as "other major or elective"?

Is it just me, or does this degree's structure seem confusing. I don't know anyone else doing it so if anyone could help it's be much appreciated. To be honest I have no idea what I'm supposed to be choosing on Wednesday. Starting to stress.

Adam, no you don't.
You select a major out of either table (only one of them):
Table A: Economics OR Political Economy
Table B: Industrial relations & HRM OR Government and International Studies

And a minor out of (or rather, 4 units in one of the following). It has to be from the table that you DONT choose for you major.
Table A: Economics OR Political Economy
Table B: Industrial relations & HRM OR Government and International Studies

If you do a major in Economics, then you have to do a minor from Table B (i.e IRHRM or Govt). If you do a major in IRHRM, you do a minor from Table A (I.e. econ or ecop)

they are only giving you examples as to what you could potentially do.
If you wish to major in economics, one of the units within an economics major is ECMT1010 (as you need it for statistical analysis etc). So they are simply suggesting that you could do
ECON1001
ECMT1010
GOVT1XXX
HSTY1XXX
in first semester, or whatever you want.

yes it is. there's room for lots of majors.
what i was telling you, was the minimum amount of subjects you need to do. The rest of your degree you still have to fill up with other subjects, which you can obviously fill up with ECOP etc

so you get any choice for unit of study 4 after choosing a major/minor from the tables?

you will be doing a total of 24 units for your degree.
Ecop major = 8 units
Govt minor = 4 units
So, that leaves you with 12 more subjects you could do.

I'm doing it too adambra. I'm majoring in Political Economy, haven't decided between Government and IR so I'm enrolling in junior units for both, but I really want to drop one of them and take up Art History instead (I'll most probably drop IR if I don't get into the Departmen of Employment and Workplace Relations). After reading the unit descriptions and judging by the many comments on this forum, the junior Government units are highly unappealing, but the senior units sounds deeply interesting (can anyone confirm?). I'll also be majoring in French, but this is more for leisure than vocational value (an Asian language would be better in this regard).

A friend tells me Prof. Frank Stilwell WON'T be taking ECOP1001 as he has usually done - is this devastatingly true? Either way, see you in ECOP1001 adambra
