Hi, does anyone know how many strategies you need to include in the China Case Study essay for Topic 1?
The question should be something like "For an economy other than Australia, discuss the strategies used to promote economic growth and development"
So far I included
Economic growth: Trade Liberalisation (Joining WTO and signing FTAs), Belt and Road Initiative
Economic development: 14th Five Year Plan (Dual circulation strategy and Common Prosperity Policy)

Hey! That question comes up a lot, and your structure is already on the right track.

There’s no strict number of strategies you have to include, but aiming for 3–4 well-developed strategies usually works well — as long as you:
  • Cover both growth and development
  • Use economic theory, real data, and policy context
  • Show clear cause-and-effect links (e.g. how a policy led to better GDP or HDI outcomes)

What you've got so far is already a solid base - just make sure each strategy is clearly tied to either growth or development (or both), and that your analysis is more than just a description (you want to assess how effective it’s been with statistics and examples).

You can also add nuance by briefly mentioning barriers to development/growth. For example, the Hukou registration system historically limited rural-urban migration and restricted access to education and healthcare for migrant workers, holding back equitable development (though it is being reformed).

If you’re looking to strengthen your case study with clear, updated evidence, I built a site called econtools.com.au where the China stats are organised by theme (e.g. trade, inequality, investment, development) - makes it easy to slot stats straight into your essay. It comes with a 1-week free trial if you want to test it out.

Reach out if you want any help testing out some ideas!
