After reading a lot of the posts associated with my question, the answer is very vague as to how school ranking affects ATAR?!?!

My friends are telling me that basically, dumb people at a smart school get scaled higher, whilst the smart people at a dumb school get scaled lower.

Is this true?

you're missing the valid point that the current school ranking does not affect marks or atar. The performance of your cohort in the 2011 hsc is what indirectly affects atar and scaling. However, in saying that, if you're ranked high in a low-ranked school, the effect is minimised.. or even if you're ranked 1st then the cohort can not drag you down

The rank that you have seen for your school will have NO affect on your ATAR. The exact opposite in fact. Your ATAR will determine your school's new rank.

If your cohort is weak but you are bright then you will be fine. If you are at a bright school but you are weak you will get the marks you deserve as you keep your own exam marks and your internal marks are moderated using those same exam marks. ATARs are determined on your raw marks based on the external marks and moderation of the internal marks to those raw external marks (not the same marks that are reported to you). School ranks are determined by the percentage of subjects in which your school gets a Band 6.

^ So in saying all that, despite all rumors, your school ranking in fact does not help scale your ATAR up or down

No, the strength of your cohort does (i.e. the BOS and UAC DO NOT consider school rank when calculating HSC marks or ATARs).

Exactly - it is the exact opposite.

The schools are all re-ranked AFTER the HSC and ATARs are determined so any school rank you are seeing has no relation to current students or their cohorts - except as an indication of how strong their school might be.
