This may appear to be an ignorant question (so I apologise in advance) but how much effort would you guys say is required to attain these ATAR ranges:

1. 70-80
2. 80-90
3. 90-95
4. 95-99.95

(Once again I do apologise because I know in order to produce results effort of a high standard should always be required)

And for the latter ATAR ranges, would you say that is it is imperative we forsake leisural pursuits, i.e. sports, socialising with friends, parties, etc and study at every available opportunity?

Thx in advance guys

You just answered it. There's also no need to forsake anything, in fact, leisural pursuits may prove beneficiary as it provides a place to relax, unwind and prevent burning out.

Also I will quote myself again in your other thread,

Preliminary is a time where mastery of study habits and skills is vital. Don't worry too much about the content; just try to get those techniques right so you enter year 12 fully confident of what is ahead of you. There's no one magical strategy that works for all; different methods of studying work for different people and it's up to you to find out what works best for you.

For the note, SC results are never indicative of HSC performance.

It differs from person to person. There's no rule of thumb in doing well in the HSC. Apply yourself to the nth degree - be happy with your end result. Bludge now, and you would probably be kicking yourself later in life. As my tutor stated, education is the key to open other doors.

Education is not a key. It's just a stepping stone.

Depends on subjects really from my perspective.

I took P50 from all my subjects and determined if I did state average at all of them, I'd get an ATAR of 93.25. P25 would be 82 - so I said that my baseline ATAR was 93.25 because that would be the lowest I could accept.

You need to know your natural abilities first, definitely. It really varies; I know a guy from ruse '10, put in barely any effort, gamed throughout the HSC, and quote "I probably put in less effort for HSC than prelim", and he ended up with 96.35. Of course, that's a guy from ruse; I also know many other people who have to work extremely hard only to get above 90.
In my personal opinion though, any person is definitely capable of 90+ if they put in the required effort, irrespective of natural ability.

Yes, it's definitely dependent on natural ability and which methods of study work best for you. I put in very little effort during the HSC (you'd be lucky to get me to spend an hour a week on homework, let alone study above homework) and ended up with 93.05, whilst others in my class put in so much more effort and didn't do quite as well. You'll have to assess yourself and work out how much effort you'll need to put in to get the results you want.

The key is to be consistent throughout all your subjects. If you can get all 80's in decent scaling subjects (incl Adv english) which doesn't take a plethora of work, you'll be looking at 85-90 easily maybe even higher depending on subjects.

Sorry but that is simply not true.

There are some kids in this state where an ATAR of 50 is a massive over achievement (I know I have taught them). One of the students I had a couple of years ago was so weak we simply aimed for her to get a Band 2 in half her subjects - she did.

Natural ability includes students who are barely able to write their names, not through lack of effort but through lack of ability and they have as much right to sit the HSC as a student who will get the university medal in medicine.

I guess I was being a bit general there; after all, at our school we do have a support unit which is included as a part of our HSC rankings by smh/whatever... but if I had to revise my statement, I guess I'd say that anyone who thinks they're capable of around 80 would be capable of achieving around 90, maybe higher.

This really depends on yourself.
I'll tell you the story of my HSC.
I was aiming for a 90+ ATAR
Me being me, I decided to aim for the bare minimum for my course. This allowed me to do shit all, all year. Paying attention to classes and getting the main points of everything was my main goal throughout the year.

My subjects were:
Standard English
Extension 2 Maths
Chemistry
Physics

Throughout the year, I only studied the night before or two nights before every exam except for maths, because to me, maths came down to practice. Also since I was doing extension 2, these were my "money units".

During the HSC exam period, i spent most of my time playing Starcraft 2 cuz I'm a horrible role model. I also studied the night before or two nights before. I also went to a few parties in the period between the trials and the HSC.

I met my goal and I'm very happy.

What should you get from this story?
You can still socialise and go to parties if you wish to so long as you keep up with a reasonable amount of study. You do not have to suffer and die throughout the year.

Not saying I encourage my behaviour, but that won't stop me from gloating.

Have fun with year 12.

You can enjoy this guy's way of life for HSC in moderation.
