lol you cannot use course averages or number of medals to claim anything.

For example, a higher proportion of D/HDs could either mean the course was easier OR it could mean the cohort was stronger OR both OR something else...

so you're telling me that like half the advanced maths cohort at usyd were so good they all deserved a university medal?

at least the proportion of arts honours students who got a university medal doesn't inflate the prestige of the medal away

in the words of syndrome from the incredibles, "and with everyone super... no one will be"

Not all of those medals were actually for maths.

so they're for what... stats?
As in other non-maths/stats fields. See this post by RealiseNothing:

Yep that's right. I know most people on that list of 8 medallists, and I know for a fact that only 2 of them did honours in maths. The others did either computer science, chemistry, or physics honours.

I think it is quite possible that UNSW maths has slightly inflated grades, the dux of UNSW maths even thinks it himself. Though this obviously isn't proof, but I would definitely be surprised if there isn't any at all.

It's done by degree. They are all listed under the Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics) degree because that is the degree they graduated with. It just means they did a major in maths in third year. It is completely possible (and happened for 6 out of the 8 listed) to do your second major in something else like physics, then do honours in physics, then top honours and get the medal for physics, yet be listed under advance maths as that is your degree.

You looked up an honours roll where everything is listed by degree, what did you expect lol. Literally no where else lists the medals by degree (or at all really)
