So what's the go? Should I change to ENGL1015 (Inventing Modernity)? Can anyone offer a pros/cons comparison?

ENGL1005 (Language and Image)
pros: quiet american is a good novel, and ok film
cons: focuses on grammar almost entirely
only has two texts
is incredibly boring

ENGL1015 (Inventing Modernity)
pros: has heaps of great texts, ranging from coleridge to blade runner
broader scope, more ideas covered, more interesting
cons: less structured

it's all pretty subjective
but i remember everyone hating 1005

ENGL1015 - Inventing Modernity
Pros: Some texts were quite good
Cons: My tutor sucked big time. I didn't like many of the lecturers and also didn't like a lot of the texts. We never really got a lecture on the topic as a whole.
Conclusion: I hated it lol But hey that's my opinion

ENGL1005 - Language and Image
Pros: Quiet American is a great film and novel! The first 7-8 weeks are quite good. I really enjoyed the first part. Surprisingly I got good marks with not HEAPS of work dedicated lol Craig is an awesome Co-ordinator; loved my tutor too
Cons: It's the maths of English. Gets quite intense and anal
Conclusion: Don't expect too much. You'll either love it or hate it depending on how much you like grammar. lol

Oooo thanks =D

Do you know if the ENGL1005 lectures are that important?
It's just that it's either a friday lecture or one at 5pm :/

Oh! this may seem irrelevant but, has anyone done CLSS1002 ? Greece and Rome in Performance? It sounds alright :D

I know people who didn't attend the lectures...I don't know how well they went though lol Some people swear by going to no lectures. They do usually supply the lectures on the net.

Try putting tutes onto Fridays and take monday off, or another day off during the week.

i second Craig Ronalds
he was a good tutor for this course, even though i didn't take much fancy

i went pretty poor in the subject and didn't turn up to lectures. though if you bothered to catch up and do the effort it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

How many novels do you have to read for this subject? (ENGL 1005)

when you guys say it's all about grammar.... is it all memorisation?

any creativity involved?

it's just the quiet american the novel (graham greene) and film adaptation

it's analytical stuff primarily, but you can interpret freely

You didn't miss anything, really.

He just sort of came in up the top of the theatre, yelled "SHOTGUN! I call the front seat!", and went down and talked to some girl. Then he ran back up the stairs, said "Have fun" to my boyfriend, and left before the lecture started.
