Hi everyone!

I'm in Yr 11 right now (obviously) and I have to make a decision soon as whether I should stay in Advanced or drop to Standard. I'm not doing too well in Advanced but I'm not doing to badly as well. I got 10/20 for our first assessment, 15/15 for the next one (partner -oral one) and 12/20 for our last one. What do you think i should do?I'm really confused!

Thanx!

nuh english standard = fked.. only 1 person in the history of course has gotten 90 SCALED... advanced eng = ppl have gotten 100..

plus nb: a 90 scaled in standard english might only be the same as a 82 in eng adv.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND U STAY IN ADV.

I think its a personal thing dropping/picking up subjects. everyone is different and i'd reccomend a few things:
+Ask your teachers about your progress and discuss how you may improve in certain weak areas and whether or not you will benefit from standard english
+Ask yourself, will you work hard in year 12 for good marks in advanced? (because the workload gets very hefty)
+Do you need english advanced to get into a your desired course at uni?
+Will you benefit from dropping down to standard in terms of your other subjects?
+Perhaps a tutor may help you in the weak areas
+Ask for opinions from current/past year 12 students standard AND advanced

My 2 cents: i was in the same position as you, except at the end of year 10 in chosing subjects. i wasnt all that good in english (in fact, i was pretty poor) and my teacher said "you should do the minimal you need to get into uni" and he was really saying "do standard". i ended up doing advanced and i did average in year 11. Now that i'm in year 12, i'm doing well because i'm focusing alot on my english. i know of one boy who did standard in year 11 but did adv in year 12 and ended up doing really bad because they two courses are really different. Although i have done standard, i can tell you that the standard of work, amount and expectations are alot higher. I beleive we do one extra module (? ) but that shouldnt get in the way of your decision. I think english advanced is a rewarding course in many ways. you begin to appreciate your texts more if it is a challenge to study them. also, you might want to consider getting an average mark in adv is the equivalent of doing elite in standard-thats how the unis see it. If you're confident and am willing to sacrifice and pay extra attention on english, then i beleive you shoudl stay in advaced :)

A 90 scaled in std is exactly the same as a 90 scaled in advanced, because they are essentially the same course, just paper 2 gets moderated against the common paper (paper one).

Ignore Mr Coroneos for a second, because 90 was the highest aligned mark, not scaled mark ever.

A 90 aligned mark in standard scales better than a 90 advanced scaled mark because both courses are scaled in the same way in terms of raw marks, and it takes more marks to get a higher aligned mark for standard... something to do with the band descriptions.

Having said that, if you like English, there's no reason to drop down.

according to the boredofstudies scaling, both english and english advanced courses scale the same.
and who really cares about the highest aligned mark etc..

its about the person.. do you really want to do english advanced next year??

i would say keep advance until u r really sick of it ....than drop down to standard
if u really need to make a choice now ur english teacher should give u the best advice
n also adv is more poetry and shakespeare whilst standard is more contemporary texts

they have both the same scaling.
hmms.. well depends if you want to do it, if you dont or is apathetic abt it then dont do it.
i think you should talk to your teacher abt it first.

Isn't standard capped though? So therefore you can never attain as high a mark as in advance. Also according to some booklet I got off my deputy which I can't seem to find, in general the trend seemed to be that you tended to get a better mark in Advance English as in doing poorly in Adv still equated to a slightly above mid-range standard mark where as topping standard you were just mid-range in Adv.

I probably don't have a clue what im talking about but I would think Advanced English would obviously be the better choice if you can cope with it. In the end the decision is yours to make dependant upon what you believe is best because everyone else can only give you opinions not decide for you.

That's what makes it hard though, cos you need time management and stuff, and you're putting all your eggs into one basket thingy. If you do bad at it, there's the whole unit gone down the drain. So EE2 people are really just gluttons for punishment, in a way.
