I've been struggling to study English a lot lately. I'm incredibly scared of not succeeding in a subject that supposedly measures my ability to 'think' and 'communicate'. These skills are incredibly crucial in the real world. They could mean the difference between a promotion and a failed application.

Is HSC English truly the only way we can measure these skills? Would not getting a band 6 in it mean you're screwed for life? Or do we just naturally develop our ability to 'think' with age. Or are the people who don't succeed in English left almost permanently behind?

Huh what. You're overdoing it now. Highschool english is a shitshow and no one can change my mind on that. The "skills" developed is the most fraudulent thing I've ever heard. Common sense and the ability to "think" and articulate can be developed throughout your life. Not specifically because of highschool english. Mate relax. English is just a subject like everything else, you just want to do well in the exam, who really cares about the skills lol.

yeh i think nsw education in general is a shitshow

what's ridiculous is that it probably won't get better for a long time considering they're now promoting a "stem" education in primary schools where they just give children ipads and call it a day

I think the main issue is that teachers promote English as a subject where students need to be able to 'adapt' to new questions and thoroughly understand their text inside out to succeed. However, what you'll tend to find from most students, generally in top selective schools as well, is that because students are so much more engaged and interested in the STEM subjects (so your Maths, Chem, Phys, Bio), they'll just rote-learn an essay and try to regurgitate it on the day, while adapting it as much as possible. In my opinion, it definitely contradicts what they're trying to achieve from us, which is why I also don't agree with how it is tested.

I do like the comprehension section of Paper 1, as that actually forces students to think critically on the spot, and actually requires creativity and deep thought. Honestly, I think that if they wanted people to be engaged in English more, including sections of the syllabus more like comprehension from Paper 1 might be the way to go.

Calm down. English in the HSC is not that important, especially how it is done in school. I tell you I did not get a band 6 in english and im pretty sure no one around me believes im dogshit at life or im messing up my future because of it. Even my own English teacher told me that is a subject where you "bullshit in style" and that really is what it has boiled down to. Really tho, an essay in very stressful conditions that require you to overanalyse a text is a rare situation in real life and it not the most helpful thing - it certainly doesn't measure you communication skills either. Sometimes there are people who just write extremely well but it doesn't appeal to the teachers, so it is not really measuring your ability to think either.

What it does though is establish a baseline level of spoken and written English for all students while allowing you to be good if you're willing to follow their "guidance" which is also rare. So rest easy, do the best you can and just be sure about yourself. Its gonna be fine.

All I can say is just... thanks. I really appreciate all your advice and I'm glad to find out HSC English isn't exactly a 100% good indicator of your critical skills.

I don't know why you have to get a band 6 to succeed in life lol. Do you really think your success is determined by how phat you can analyse Shakespeare and then crank a creative on some shitty stimulus no one cares about?

That sort of mindset might apply for some people, but there's a lot of people who want to achieve the best results they can (so they will aim for all Band 6s) just so they can get into their course at uni the easiest way (through high school). Otherwise, it can become much more difficult in the future trying to transfer to a desired course through the university scheme. Put in the grind now so you can relax and achieve your dream course later on. HSC students only have 3 months left, so might as well persist through before earning an extremely well-deserved break
