When using quotes in essays, can we change them a bit to make them gramatically correct, or do we have to use the exact quote?
Thanks!

Yeah, that's right, the square brackets.AkaiHanabi said:If you're going to change them you have to use brackets ==> []
eg Original quote "I'm hungry"
In sentence: She said "[she's] hungry"
At least, that's how I've been told to do it. Oo
Your quote doesn't have to be exact if your quoting from a novel (Is the teacher really going to look through the novel to see if it is right?). But if it is something like question 1 in the Area of Study Paper you should quote word for word.Dr. Zoidberg said:When using quotes in essays, can we change them a bit to make them gramatically correct, or do we have to use the exact quote?

Don't you use an ellipse when you are skipping a few words?marcquelle said:brackets [] or elipsise ...
