okay for those who've had private english tutors (qualified teachers, not uni students) how much did you get charged per hour?

my current one is an hsc marker and charges $45 for 1 1/2 hrs ( there are 3-4 people in my tuition group), but she doesn't take essays home to mark which makes the tutoring really inefficient. today i rang up another hsc marker and she said she charges 50/ph for one-on-one, but she doesn't take home essays to mark either! (i dunno how much i'll need to pay for them to be marked...)

my friend's tutor (is not an hsc marker, but a professor at usyd or something) charges 60/ph but you can basically bombard him with questions and essays to be marked anytime, via email, phone, sms, whatever. just wondering what kind of tutors you guys have had and whether mine are being reasonable? thanks

xiao do you know any hsc markers? :p it's kinda superstitious, but every single one i've seen has been brilliant, and i can't really trust a teacher who isn't a marker, because well, they might be very wrong about things. i think my teacher isn't very competent sometimes, that's one of the reasons why i haven't given her any essays to mark, velox ... although i ought to ay, any feedback is good, plus it's for free.

I personally think essays should NOT be marked at home by a tutor. You gain much more knowledge if a teacher/senior hsc marker/marker whatever, marks the essay WITH you during tutoring and talks you through it. That way you can pick up on all of your mistakes and they can talk about aspects as you go through it, rather than writing a demeaning comment at the end. By them marking an essay and talking with you as they do, you will learn a lot about WHAT questions actually require you to do, and how to answer effectively. You will be surprised by what you learn.

Not trying to deter you, but in reality hsc markers are teachers ( quite literally when you think about). There are SO many english hsc markers in the state. Most schools would have at least one. If you want to ensure a high standard and seek another view/advantage you should get a senior marker ( or even better head markers) Although from my experience many senior markers seem to think that they have absolute authority on the subject ( and remember there are many senior markers as well)

You can also find really got ex-hsc setters english tutors, who know how the examination is set and yeah they can be quite good.

In terms of price I know many teachers in general who charge $40 or $50 an hour, and they are not markers.

You should approach your own teacher or another teacher at your school, in my experience they are more than happy to help. Even if you ask say your year 8 or 7 english teacher, mostly they are only too glad to assist you ( however dont expect them to mark it quickly, leave them with plenty of time)

anyway i hope you got somethign out of my blabbering on...

i have different views on how the essay should be marked...

ideally, the tutor should have read the essay before hand, and points out where structure alterations maybe made....

afterwards, a discussion of the ideas, readings on the text should follow, where the tutor should crticise any logic inaccuracies or readings of the text, with students counter argues or learns s th new...

i agree taht reading comments are rather useless, but i can't see how the tutor spending time during tutee's time reading the essay while the tutee is rather bored aside doing nothing is any more helpful... esp avg essay would be, i say 1000 + words?! and plus the tutor need to made a note where arguements are flawed, where techniques could be improved...

as for hsc marker, yes understandably a vast majority of them knows their stuff... but keep in mind that hsc markers are teachers... not that i am having a go at eng teachers, few of those who i met know nxt to nothing, and they are hsc markers...

and i also happen to share ur view on how askin ur yr7/8 teachers to mark them...

lastly... teachers are very very dedicated when they are good... but if they are not good... wut uai do u need to get into teaching?! cf to those who are offering tutorin who also is doing b art with eng major in uni?!
i make no comments tho...

i know what you mean, my english teacher in yr 12 was sooo crap and didn't know anything, so i got another (good) english teacher to mark mine and she was happy to do it, perhaps ask another teacher (if you trust them)

also don't underestimate uni students, i got tutored by a uni student and she was soooo good, she pulled me up from like 150/200 to 10/200 after my trials

i dont get it

i don't get why english teachers charge so much for tutoring, well i understand it would be a bit harder than math so they deserve a little more money but not total rip off. There's a good tutor near yagoona (bankstown) which i go to, pm me if interested and theres another in cabramatta

I think the reason why English costs more is because there are less English tutors about.... tutoring centres tend to focus on maths etc.

exactly:)

just coz a teacher is a teacher or a marker doesn't mean sh*t - they could be a crap teacher and a useless marker..

at least if you got a uni student who did well, they understand what you're going through and how best to approach it and can give you more objective advice:)

that's very true, i just had this ext 1 english assessment and this uni student, Ashlee Betteridge, proofread my stuff and helped me when i was completely clueless and she's damn good! school teachers like the one i have for adv eng are really really really really crap. the good one i had till last term went off on maternity leave and we're stuck with some woman who has no clue about our texts and no clue about what we're doing and spent approximately 2 and a half weeks deconstructing ONE text from the stimulus booklet which is of no use to anyone after the trials.....so stupid!

uh not really any point advertising in here since this thread has nothing to do with people asking for an english tutor...

use the other threads for that....
