Entering Medicine?? (1 Viewer)

Hi!

I am in Year 11 and am very confused about entering medicine. I want to get into a career where
I could actually interact with people. I was thinking optometry/dentistry/paediatric. Just wondering how long
it would take to actually begin a career. I have heard that to do optometry and paediatrics, I have to get in to
Bachelor of Medicine first which takes a minimum of 5 years to complete and then specialise. Are there any accredited
MED courses where I do not have to enter into bachelor medicine first???

Dentistry and optometry are separate courses to medicine. I think Optometry takes about 4 years and I think Dentistry is either the same or a post-grad course now. Pediatrics is a specialty of medicine which means you have to do a medicine degree first before you can go into that specialty.

Usually medicine takes about 5-6 years to complete and then you have to do few years of interning before you can specialise (minimum is 1 year I think).

all medical courses require a medical degree. u sort of answered ur own question already.
dentistry and optom are not considered as part of the medical field.

The difference between medicine and Dentistry;

When you graduate Dentistry from uni; you face the dental board, become registered and you're free to work wherever you want. With medicine after 5 years of uni; you then have to practice supervised for x number of years, then once you chose the field you want to specialise in you enrol in an appropriate 'college' and undertake a few years to gain your specialisation. NOTE: Medicine and Dentistry are extremely difficult to get into. You cannot go into your HSC unsure of what you want. Do some work experience in the fields and see if its what you want.

Hey, thanx for the info. Just wondering is a bachelor of dental science degree enough to become a dentist or i have to do a post grad course after BODS???
One more thing- I know i need UMAT to get into dentistry do i have to go through an interview too???

Bachelor of Dental Science is the equivalent to Bachelor of Dental Surgery. And yes you will be a Dentist. The same as anyone with DDS or DDM. Just an undergrad name.
