In terms of energy, when is escape velocity attained?

Escape velocity according to Newton is the minimum velocitry required to escape the gravitational attraction of a object in space.

It is attained when (4 earth), a speed of 11200 meters per second, or about 25,000 miles per hour.

kinetic energy = 0.5*m*v^2

so calculate your escape velocity, square it, times it my the mass of the object and divide it by 2 to get the energy required to give that object its escape velocity (neglecting friction)

just for the sake of it...

kinetic energy = gravitational potential energy

1/2m1v^2 = Gm1m2/r

m1 = mass of satelite, m2 mass of planet.

So, by rearranging, v^2 = 2Gm/r,

so

escape velocity = sqrt (2Gm(e)/R), where G is gravitational constant, m(e) is mass of planet, R is radius of planet.
