When discussing the effectiveness of the law, you're basically describing how the law managed to address the effectiveness criteria set out in the legal studies syllabus, which is:
- protection of an individual's rights
- enforceability
- application of the law
etc etc
You can find evidence to support your judgements in media articles, transcripts of the hearing, legislation/cases cited throughout the hearing, and so forth.
A search of Simon Gittany in Google brings up many media articles documenting his case, which can be used as evidence. Also, I recommend looking through AustLi (very dry but can be helpful) or other official websites and read through the transcript of the hearing/sentencing, which can also be used as evidence.

I hope I was able to help :)

Legal system being the criminal justice system? If so, look at the syllabus points
Explore the criminal investigation and trial process maybe even sentencing and punishment

remember think effectiveness of what the purpose of the system or the law is
1. achieving justice
2. balancing the rights of the offender, victim and society

I hope this helps, i may be wrong though! ;)
