Excited state and spectroscopy (1 Viewer)

When light passes through electrons I know that some light waves are absorbed excited state etc. Since, the absorbed light is released when electrons go back to ground state, what happens to the rest of the unabsorbed light? Does it just pass through the gaps between atoms?

You have to understand that a specific amount of energy is required in the light waves to be absorbed for the electrons to be excited. For e.g. if there is an orbit with energy 1eV and another with 3eV, then the light wave absorbed has to have 2eV specifically. Otherwise, none of the light wave is absorbed (say the light wave now has 2.1 eV ... it's that specific because electrons can't be between orbits because these orbits have discrete energy levels). Is that what you're confused with?
