It's not a special number, it's the default number in NSW which gets used as a marking criteria for A (84-100%), anything below that should be a B etc.

band 6 - 90-100
band 5- 80-89
band 4 -70-79
band 3 - 60-69
band 2 - 50-59
band 1 - below 50

extension subs
E4- 45-50
E3 -40-44

I disagree with this. I believe it depends entirely on your school; the difficulty level of your tests. Ultimately, your rank amongst your year would be the most important contributor to whether you are capable or not.

It's good to disagree, you have a point also, rank is the most important contributor. Thanks for your input on my reply the OP. You have mentioned something that probably no one has mentioned and is really important to ones success.

If you're ripping most the kids in 2u and 3u w/o trying. Assuming you get at least 80% w/o much study

Depends on ur school exams... Usually ur school can determine and recommend you:
For my school they wanted:
90%+ for 2u (I got 98%) - 2u papers were easy
80%+ for 3u (I got 85%)- 3u papers were hard
Basically you should like maths and be good at it.
