hey guys, i just moved to a selective school this year and w covid and all that stuff, math has me falling behind :( i used to always come top 5 in my old school for year 10 5.3 math but now i got my results and they are horrific.

i got 35% for advanced and 18% for extension 😭😭

my teacher is very anxiety triggering and i remember blanking out in the exam. this is also JUST before i started tutoring and my studying wasn’t the best. i shouldn’t be making excuses for myself but i have no excuses! other students who are new got at LEAST 50%.

i’m dropping to adv 100% for year twelve but what am i supposed to think of this mark? it was my first year11 math exam btw.

any advice is appreciated

dont worrying its your first year 11 exam so you dont know there style or format, you just have to get used to there teaching, do past papers (THIS IS KEY), and dont stress i remember going to tutoring class when i was young when i used to be bottom of my class, and getting 40% rank 38/39 but the more u get used to id u will improve!

You should drop it all together... If you can't get it now, what makes you think you'll get it in the future?
not sure if you're joking...

anyway, there's ALWAYS a chance to improve, even after trials during year 12! I know many students who have drastically improved in their subjects, including maths during the hsc year. at a selective school the standards are way higher compared to 90% of the schools in aus so trust me even if ur rank sucks you're probably doing better than the rest of the nsw cohort. either way keep at it and good luck!

Hey there! Don't be too worried - these are just early days are there's heaps of time to improve.

Going into year 12, it might be a good idea to consider general maths. Some of my peers (selective) had shocking MX1 results (in the single digit %s) and still managed to get band 6s in general maths as they were competent with the non-calculus based mathematics.

This stuff happens, won't kill you if it happens again. Just learn from your mistakes and improve.

Hey don't stress about it!

Something similar actually happened to me lmao. I moved to a top 10 selective school and I flunked my first Extension English exam (I got like 60% lol). Obviously covid wasn't a problem for me since this was 2 years ago but it was not a great mark and I was really upset, but don't let this one mark define you (especially under these circumstances)! After that, I studied even harder, went through my practice essays and I picked it up after that to be ranked 3rd in my grade by HSC.

Don't stress, just use this as a learning experience. Talk to your teachers (or other teachers in the faculty) to see where you went wrong, learn from your mistakes and improve. Don't be disheartened by this one negative experience, believe in yourself!

No worries! Trust me when I say that one assessment means literally nothing, especially since you are only in Y11! Don't let one poor assessment define your own ability and knowledge, you ARE good at maths and your previous results clearly show that! Moving schools is a massive change, so don't take it to heart, and don't blame yourself! I wish I had someone tell me this haha, so trust me when I say that you will be ok! Don't put too much pressure on yourself, just work hard, and focus on improving yourself. Good luck : ))

You should get a life and stop putting others done. You seem to have an issue with ‘constructive criticism’. Would it hurt that much to put a little kindness into your words or is that too much of a big issue for you?

I wasn’t backing you up..
I mean like how ppl are so judgemental and I hate those people who just are so toxic and just absolutely troll these people. You can be realistic ... but that whatsup guy literally telling @hxns to beg on the street and drop out, that is absolutely rude and disrespectful. Hxns could be earning more than that dickhead in future.

He does sound like @Hscbuzman and I’ve countered him before, this guy falls in the same category, perhaps a friend or alternate account?
