Using the transformation method to solve:

√2 sin(x) + cos(x) = √3

asin(x) + bcos(x) is expressed in the form Asin(x + α)

For here, what is the value of A?

Since, A = √(a² + b²) => but I'm not sure if a = √2 since if I do it, it won't be a integer.

Doesn't need to be an integer. It's just the amplitude of that particular trig function - i.e. the function will oscillate between a and -a.

For this particular question A=sqrt(3)

Ahh thanks man, I can't believe I did a very dumb thing again... I wrote the wrong thing compared to what I should have said. When I was working out I did √((√2) + 1) ... forgot to square it >.< . Yup √3 is perfect.
