Well a lot of people have said that people who do get laptops might lose their ability to write neatly and quickly over time. How did the people with laptops overcome that considering written exams seem like such a huge component in university courses?

I have a laptop, but not one that I bought for uni. I've had this laptop though high school, I had the 1st laptop from yr7-10 and this in 11 and 12, so its only two years and old and still pretty good. Not sure how much I'll use it uni, didn't end up using it that much in year 12 (Never used it for methods, psychology, business - only in legal & english, and even then I didn't actually need to have it most of the time). I think I may not bring it a lot of the time, just can't be bothered carrying the weight around, I have walked around carrying one on school grounds for about 6 yrs, but won't necessarily continue the trend. Also, though, my laptop has fair crap battery life. It wouldn't last much more than around 2hrs with word open I think, let alone internet and other stuff also. Though I guess they'd have powerpoints, right....

As for the thing about writing ability, well, my handwriting is quite good, despite the heavy laptop use, however some people I know in school really struggled to write, especially when it came time for an essay, though we are talking like 3 people out of probably 150. Before exam time this year there was quite a bit of focus, particularly in english (3 essays, 3k words, 3 hour exam) on using handwriting in the 8 weeks or so prior to the exam.

Just take notes in lectures, then you still have to write fast and neat.
And when you do study ntoes, write them instead of type them.
Easy done.

Don't buy a laptop.

I spend my time primarily watching pornos on it, even at uni.

I bought myself an ASUS T91 (the new tablet eeepcs) and they're fantastic for uni. Not only are they under 1kg and totally compact, but they're a tablet and when coupled with good inking software I can choose between typing or writing out my notes. I got mine for $700AUD + Shipping a while back and they're only like $600AUD or less now. I recommend one.

I have a tablet. They are absolutely useless. Nobody ever uses them. The only time I ever used it in HS was when I was so bored of a class I'd scribble around with it in paint type programs. Why not just use a notepad or type? Tablets are stupid.

i think that's the point of getting a tablet, to scribble penises during lectures when you get bored
