Personally i believe it to be the most superb novel i've read in a long time. The extra good thing about it is that its, in a way, the first science fiction novel. A terrific achievementy and i strongly recommend it to anyone.

Agree wholeheartedly with the above!

It captures understated emotion very well, and the characterisation! 2 infinitely complex characters! Although, if you're detail oriented, it could be tarnished a little by the scientific methods, but other than that, I am very much in awe of the novel, even having read it 6 weeks before...

.. I think I'll go and have another read.

i really enjoyed the book, i loved the creation's story.

one thing i hated about it was Victor, his creation tells him he will be there on his wedding night and Victor thinks "oh shit his going to kill me" (not an exact quote), instead of the creation killing his mate to revenge victor for making him a mate.

Why would you hate him for that?

Because as evident there, he only thinks for himself and not of those around him. Clearly he is so selfish that he does not even contemplate the harm that could come to his wife.

i thought it just made victor a very selfish character. I dunno it just annoyed me, maybe for the fact that i knew he wasnt going to die in that part of the book.

but other then that i loved the book. my heart broke when the creation was accepted by the blind man, and then the rest of teh Delacey family came home and saw the creation, fearing him. just when he found someone who could accept him.

i envy shelley, she wrote this book when she was 19, she wrote a classic at the age of 19!

It came as a shock to me when the Creature came after the wife as well, I thought he was going to go after Victor. Is it selfish to lack foresight? Is it selfish, due to an intrinsic trait, to lack the ability to think in other ways? Is it selfish that he was naturally born that way, to be completely submissive to a characteristic he had no control over?

Or was Victor ruined by circumstance?

Essentially, do you hate Victor for his lack of foresight, stupidity, or selfishness?

I personally struggle to answer these questions.

It is his isolation from nature that has removed him from his humanity. During his time in isolation creating the creature, his humanity is lost to the science and the furor of his creation. So involved was he in his need to be remembered through history as the first to create life, basic human traits, such as the lack of insight into the creatures threat, is lost. The consequence of delving too deep into forbidden knowledge is represented by Shelley through Victor's loss of family and friends, and Victor suffers the worse fate of losing his humanity.

i dislike him for his lack of compassion, he creates a creature, and then runs away due to the creatures yellow eye. He created the creature to be stronger, to be bigger.... which in turn made him a uglier. ("the beauty of the dream vanished and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart")
the creation himself says
"you my creator abhor me; what hope can I gather from your fellow creatures that owe me nothing?"

Some parts were ok, the themes were interesting, but overall...I just couldn't bear the tragedy of it all...it was completely joyless.
