#1: Make sure you listen very carefully in class to understand the teacher's and other students' viewpoints on the conceptual ideas explored in your prescribed text. Don't waste this valuable time talking with friends. Active listening and note taking are essential to assist you to formulate a personalised viewpoint on the text with consideration of other's viewpoints as well. DEVELOPING A SOPHISTICATED, PERSONALISED RESPONSE are essential for getting the highest marks in your exam. So talk less and listen more

I would have finished my exam period before the seminar (and I don't even have an english half yearly ^^; ). I would love to come since I am hearing many good things from it and my analysing skills aren't all that great (hence, standard). I will see if I can make it.

Don't limit your potential at acing in English just because you are doing standard English, regardless of what level of English you are doing, by coming to the seminar, you will be actively taking the first step to define your own results, and if you actively engage with the seminar, I will promise to transform your attitude towards English-which is essential for transforming your results. Improving my marks and my overall attitude towards English is probably something I need to do. I'm always limiting myself when it comes to English because I don't feel like I can achieve the high mark I want to achieve. From now on I'll start motivating and pushing myself just a bit more. Thank you for your kind words, I'll take it into consideration ~

Tip#2:Always read the questions for the comprehension section before reading the unseen texts on belonging. This way you will be reading with purpose and using your exam time wisely. You will be understanding the texts as well as actually finding information relevant to your questions at the same time.

Remember, relevant and concise information which is well supported by valid textual evidence is the key to maximising your marks in section 1 of the belonging paper.

Tip#3: Whenever you receive an assessment task, make sure you understand every single word on the assessment task sheet. Make sure you request a marking criteria whenever possible. When you are writing practice essays, get your teacher to mark the essay according to the marking criteria, not just give you general comments.

Remember, THE MORE YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE ASSESSMENT TASK, the better you can answer its requirements. After you get your assessment results-it is YOUR responsibility to ask the teacher for more detailed comments on how you can improve. Don't put the blame on teacher not giving you enough detailed comments-take the initiative to ASK Don't be shy and you'll be more than fine

Tip#4: Remember to use TEXT specific techniques when analysing any text.
For example, if your text is a film-you should use cinematographic techniques and not literary ones, likewise if your text is a novel-you should focus on literary techniques.

They had to be reminded. You my friend are one who uses common sense, unfortunately for some common sense is not so common. Hahaha

This tip was based on my experiences in HSC and my own essay marking experience(short as it is) where I have observed many people analyses more movie dialogue rather than visual techniques when analysing films. You are one of those who have gained such knowledge and consciously using it to improve your essay writing, which is great to see

Yep many students do this, I remember having to fix my Blade Runner paragraphs before trials/HSC in regards to a lack of film techniques in my previous essay(s) for example.

Not really for all texts.

E.g. Many students will use literary/poetic techniques in their ''Hamlet'' essays (which is a play, not a poem or short story) which is fine but they completely forget about 'dramatic' techniques.
