The dotpoint say "IDENTIFY" why g forces are used. Most of the textbooks only explain what g forces are and their effects on astronauts but never WHY they are USED. So why are they used?

I'm pretty sure it is what g forces are used, so upward and downward acceleration during lift off..

Unless you are referring to the types of forces used to leave earth and to return to earth, where you introduce gravitational, centripetal etc.

I don't get it. Ok, so if the question says " Give reasons why the term g force is used to describe the forces on astronauts", how are we going to answer it?

ok here is an example question.
say an astronaut is experiencing 6g during lift off

He will experience 5g upward force and 1g downward because of gravity

to answer your question
you can about positive and negative g forces, and there consequences. thats it really

It is used as it provides an easy measure of the force as a ratio to the usual force and provides an accurate representation of the stress on the astronaut. This allows for easier comparisons between astronauts as their true weights vary.
