Isn't this question a lot like the HSC 2005 Q9? So would it be best to make y the length of the whole beam as maximum stress would occur at the ends?I got D in the end, any opinions?

mate, the wealth of knowledge you need to know for engineering studies due to its crap and broad syllabus is not even worth it as it's scaling is abysmal (don't fall into the trap in saying "oh but it aligns well", well who gives a shit about aligning, at the end of the day if you want to go to uni, scaling is what matters). Never should you even think about going near this course (it was like Pandora's fucking box, i saw it was like "ewww it looks fun", but OH MY FUCKING GOD I WAS WRONG, BLOODY DEATH CAME OUT OF THE BOX, AND I HAD TO FREAKING LIVE WITH IT FOR A WHOLE YEAR), and please spread the word and save the countless generations of HSC students to come to avoid this shock horror of a subject. I even dropped bloody maths ext 2 for this shit, no doubt its up there with the greatest regrets in my life so far (what makes it worse math ext 2 is a godly scaling subject and i was ranked 2nd for math ext 1, stupid i know). well for me, my other subs are good enough to get the atar i want and i'm glad i did the subject because it is extremely interesting. but hands down you're right, the subject is ridiculously difficult for what you actually get out of it
but maths ext 2 is my life. I would have never imagine myself dropping it. If I can't get expected results in mx2, then I will feel shit. I really am not worried much about scaling cos I can't get it med so what's the point of a 99.4? The thing is that engineering blood runs in my veins. And if I can't get into med, I go aerospace engineering. Its really not about content or syllabus. It's a matter of if wanting to learn it. Although if there is bullshit like ethics or societal development in history and all that history stuff then it's better I didn't do it.
