I'm really stuffed for Geography. Our teacher is very incompetent and disorganised at times. Nice lady but incompetent and because of this my class hasn't really learned anything in Geography except that our teacher went to Cabramatta or Fairfield or some goddamn place on the weekends and found it such a great place that we should visit there one day, yadayadayadayada (OK, that was bit mean, we have learned some stuff in geography but it has only been superficial and not in depth). Our whole class for example had no idea what the hell we had to do for our RAP and we ended up not actually doing the RAP but actually doing the action report, even going as far as interviewing people for primary sources, making complete wankers of ourselves. Some of us even lied. Tres stupide de nous, n'est-ce pas?

OK, so my question or request to you guys- could any of you guys if it won't be too much of a hassle share some of your notes you have received for Geography or recommend some good sites? What's a geographical issue? What is a geographical process? How do you construct a RAP? I understand some people don't give two flying shits about geography and I understand where that comes from but if you can help me in any way possible I would really appreciate it!

Lol, I have yr10 notes on all the issues that we study, but I don't think the appology to Stolen Generations is in there, sorry. Hope it helps though.

Hey I'm in exactly the same situation! My geography teacher is... an idiot. Really he is, it's quite shocking. I've got a great collection of quotes from him, but as for geography... yeah he taught us nothing.

My own notes may not be much help to you, but I recommend looking at the "handy hints for the school certificate" thread. It tells you exactly all the things you're meant to know about. From there, maybe get your hands on a textbook or study guide, and look at some of the notes people have been posting (including the one above me) because lots of them are really great. I find that in general it's easier to understand than history stuff.

The main topics are Geographical Issues (including air quality, waste management etc), Australia's Regional and Global links (aid, trade etc) and Future Challenges (population, human rights).

Geographical issues are areas of concern that arise due to change in environments. These issues can be investigated from spatial and ecological dimensions.

Spatial Dimensions explains where things are and why they are there
Ecological Dimensions explains how humans interact with the environment

Some issues are: Air Quality, Urban Growth and Decline, Spatial Inequality, Waste Management, Land and Water management, Coastal Management.

RAP

Rap step

- Identify aim or purpose of investigation. e.g. to investigate water level at Creek
- Generate questions to be answered by investigation E.g. What changes have occurred in the area for the last five years? What chemicals can be found here?
- Secondary and Primary Sources to answer questions e.g. Primary: Test the water for salinity. Secondary: obtain figures from Bureau of Meteorology of rainfall in the catchment
- Techniques to collect data. e.g. PH universal indicator
- Collect data e.g. water testing needs to be carried on a number of days
- Process and analyse data. Observe the trends. e.g. draw a line graph to show changes over past five years
- Propose and take individual or group action. e.g. Write to mayor about findings.
Write a press in newspaper.
- Select presentation methods to communicate research. e.g. Map showing range of land uses, sources of pollution, etc. Remember to use geographical tools like maps, photos, sketches, diagrams, tables and reports.

REMEMBER: The RAP is a plan of your fieldwork, not a report on it.

I'm in a similar position to you! My teacher is just plain lazy. To be fair, we have learnt a few things, but all he really does is shove textbooks in our faces and goes back to sit with his newspaper. Honestly, some teachers really shouldn't be teaching.

And also, studentcheese, thanks for the points on RAP! I was having a few troubles as well - I didn't even know what a RAP was until about a month ago.
