For our modern history half yearlys we have to write an essay which is going to be marked out of 25 marks. And its going to be on Germany 1918-1939 however only the first two main syllabus dot points. (up to 1934)

Should i memorise an essay and adapt to the question or? I'm scared that if i don't memorise an essay I'm not going to be able to write enough or have a strong argument etc due to poor planning?

What does everyone else usually do? and what do you guys recommend?

You should NEVER take a pre-prepared or memorised essay into a modern exam unless you know the exact question/s. Unlike english or SOR, its near impossible to mold your essay to the exam question. Even if your pre-prepared response is from the same syllabus point as a question on the exam, it will still be difficult to mold your response unless the questions are asking you to do virtually the same thing.

To study for modern essays, try and learn the content, but focus on the issues which arise from each syllabus point (as opposed to memorising dates etc). Also do a few practice essays to improve your essay writing technique.
