I used to go to Museum and take the bus from there. It was a little quicker catching the bus from there to UNSW actually, but an extra 3 minute train ride.
Not an unwise idea, especially during the first few weeks of uni. During then, the line would tend to either: extend about 100m into the park; or extend beyond the bridge (where the train line is) and then even around the corner of the road.

M50 is worth catching as well during those few weeks - the Central station stop is the road adjacent to Eddy Av, on Elizabeth Street.

Might try doing that in peak hours for simplicity to avoid the packed buses and roads. The M10, L94, 396/7/9 from Museum usually join onto Anzac Parade near the golf club, where most other buses from Central go.

Will try the M50 and see how different it is.
