Okay, so we have been seeing a lot of threads recently, most of them being "[suburb] RTA Ps test..."

Rather than having these threads over and over again we should get one topic that people can look at first, and it will cover most of their questions.

First things first.

-Your car must be road worthy. The day before your test check your brake lights and indicators and also tires.
-Make sure your logbook is completed.
-Don't attempt to bribe your instructor
-Listen to your examiners instructions carefully. It is an automatic fail to refuse a reasonable order.
-Don't drive one handed, even if you can or it is more comfortable. If you don't know the correct way to hold the wheel for a test get out of this thread, do some more hours and read the rta website.


Now as for the test. Here are the major tips I can think of. As other people add more I will edit this post so people don't have to scroll through the whole thing.

Be more careful than your normally would with everything. That doesn't mean hesitant. It means leave slightly bigger gaps and make sure to be smooth in acceleration and braking.

- Keep your checking your speed. Exceeding the speed limit is an automatic fail. Driving 5 km/h under the speed limit is good practise in case there is a paralax error on the instructors behalf. Also if there is a downward slope you will have some breathing space before you have to brake, whereas if you were on the limit you would go over it straight away.

- You must stop before the line at a stop sign. Even if there was someone in front of you, you must still stop again.

- Head-checks should be performed before any manoeuvre and every now and then while just continuing straight. Every time you check your speedo have a quick glance in your rear-view and side mirrors too.

- Depending on the time of day, beware of school zones.

- Maintain a safe distance behind the car infront. When you are taking the test this should probably be more than you would usually leave. There is no hurry though, so don't hesitate to back off a bit from the car infront. Also when stopping behind someone, leave atleast a car length gap.

- Don't forget your indicators! Remember to indicate left when exiting a roundabout. You should indicate 5 seconds before any manoeuvre

- When parking you must leave a meter gap infront of you if you are doing a reverse park. You must also be within 500mm of the kerb. This is quite a lot, so just take your time and do it right the first time. You are allowed upto 4 movements before you are penalised.

- Remember that when you are reversing the front of your car will swing into the lane a bit, so do a head check before reversing.

- When doing a three-point-turn you must check behind you before starting. You are allowed up to a five-point turn but if it is a wide street you may lose marks for needing more than 3.

- Do not run yellow lights unless it is dangerous to stop.

- Do not take tight spaces when turning at an intersection. If a car coming toward you has to slow down you should have waited.

- When doing a hillstart you are supposed to use your handbrake, even in an automatic and regardless of whether or not you need it.

If you're waiting at traffic lights, which then turn green, make sure to look left and right in case of drivers who run a red light.

Signal 3-5 secs in advance

Always be aware of traffic signs, and what's going on around you.

My tip (as noted in first post) is to try and disregard a lot of the bad habits you may have picked up recently such as driving too close or giving a very light glance over your shoulder (i.e. almost none at all) and coasting up to stop signs/intersections (as opposed to coming to a complete stop).

Basically make every action very clear and pronounced. That is, when you're looking over your shoulder to change lanes, make it quite obvious (as opposed to a flick of your head). When you're waiting for 3 seconds at a stop sign, make sure it's quite obvious and be at a complete stop (i.e. not coasting). When waiting to enter a roundabout, make it quite clear you are looking for oncoming traffic... When going through construction work make it quite clear you are slowing down to 40km/h. etc. The best thing to do is go with an instructor on a similar route beforehand because that helps you find out where the tricky spots are (e.g. you'll know which roads you're turning onto are multi-laned and whether or not there's stop signs, school zones, construction work, etc).

Oh and simple pointer- make sure your car is fit for the test (lights working, etc).

- Don't forget the car lights on while testing them and your brakes etc before the test.. as i nearly did!
- Try to show the tester you have confidence on the wheel.. even if your extremely nervous and try to continue the test if you make minor mistakes, as if they never happened or else you won't concentrate on the rest of the test.
- Listen carefully to where to turn left/right next as the tester was pointing straight to turn left.. where a intersection was present 100m away... when it ended up being a street 10m away!
- Practice returning into the RTA and parking in the parking spot as if you are returning from the test
- Go at around the time of your test and see how much traffic there will be as 10am has many more cars on the road compared to driving at 7pm in the same RTA street!
- Have your hands on the steering wheel at all times at 10 minutes to 2pm or quarter to 3pm

thought no one would say that. but yeah it's a good idea to know the place and surrounding areas around that time.

and also, if you're in a two-lane road, and the driver in the right lane is turning right, put your blinker on and get into the left lane so that you don't have to wait for the driver to turn.

it doesn't matter if the instructor doesn't tell you to do so. when you pass the driver, get back into your original lane.

Your points are for the most part valid but two things: If you need to practise returning to a carpark I wouldn't say you are ready to take the test. The other one is more esoteric but your description of steering is a bit confusing.

You can either use the push pull method or the hand over hand method. Also you can take one hand off the wheel to do other functions (obviously) - people shouldn't be worrying about their hands - if you need to turn on the wipers or de-misters that is more important.

and reverse parkings have been taken out of the exam. you only have to complete a curb side parking, and a 3-point turn.
