haha, thank you... and those are just my girly singers ;-p i'm not a -huge- missy elliot or neneh cherry fan, but i still like them so i thought i'd list them...

i like sheryl crow and jewel although i'm definitely of the "first album lucky" opinion :)

edit:
and you are from byron bay !!!
i love byron so hardcore... i'm there for a week or so in january :)

All you crazies seem to have forgotten Joni Mitchell. download / purchase the album "Blue" and any other of her earlier stuff. & "Hejira", etc.

joan baez has the sweetest most beautiful voice in the world <3 Diamonds & Rust is one of my favourite songs ever.

AND also Minnie Riperton (ie Adventures in Paradise); some of her lyrics are trite on occasion but her voice is just stunning.

You title the thread 'Good Female Vocalists', then mention courtney love?

Anyway as far as i can remember:

Sarah Brightman (best female singer in the world IMO)
Delta Goodrem
Amy Lee (from Evanescence)
tatu

They're the only ones from my CDs (the mainstream ones anyway) that i consider good.

Courtney love is both a wonderful, and a terrible, female role model. I refuse to write her off completely. But Hole is(/was) a good band.

TATU??? please tell me that statement was dripping with sarcasm. Courtney could whip the pants off Tatu anyday.

hmmm, no one seems to be mentioning people like Celine and Mariah... while they make crap music (most of the time) I reckon you have to be able to call them good singers.

Hi snakeoils! I haven't seen you here for a long time...

I mentioned Celine, but was a bit hesitant on Mariah. :)

I don't want to bag Delta, she's a lovely girl with a great attitude and she's drop dead gorgeous, but her voice isn't as good as everyone thinks it is. She does have a nice voice, and she's definitely not a bad singer, but in comparison to some of the other women you've named on this thread, she's nothing.

oooooooh, how could I have forgotten Joni Mitchell!! thanks for the reminder...Blue is definitely her best album. Tho i think she is a better songwriter than singer.

and i agree about Stevie Nicks...
