Nah deadset if I had the inclination and knew where to get a pistol I don't think pulling off an armed robbery would be particularly hard.

~$1000 (no guarantee of that even) vs. x% chance of getting arrested and receiving a jail term.

You're gambling years of potential income (disclaimer: I have no idea what sentences are typically given for armed robbery, I presume it's years- especially if you actually shot someone), tens (or hundreds) of thousands of $ even on the lowest wage (not to mention the other costs of being in prison), for stolen returns of only perhaps 1-2% of your potential prison term earnings.

Even if x is only equal to a single percentage point chance of you getting caught, it's a poor investment.

Would you bet $100'000 at a casino, with a 95% chance of winning $2000, against a 5% chance of losing everything (the risk in armed robbery is higher than this imo), and being locked in a cell and deprived of your friends, family and everything you enjoy for a period of years?

Armed robbery is not a rational investment.

Then you'd have to be ready to potentially kill someone for it, which kinda freaks me out, man...

Edit: Er more importantly, if it really worked then I think people would not only succeed in doing it, but also continue to do it. This doesn't really seem to happen, that is unless it's not reported? *shrug*

nah I wouldn't even load it. Also what graney said is true, rationally I have no need to. If I had zero prospects but new some sick cunt who sold guns it would be a different story.

You wouldn't be acting rationally in that case.

Or, if employment prospects for yourself were sufficiently low, and your prospective earnings for the next few years were almost certainly not much better than $0, then it may become rational. At least you get a feed in prison.

Whaa? AFAIK most armed robbers don't get caught during the crime. Loose lips sink ships? Those guys who were blowing up ATMs and held up a bunch of security guards got away with it for ages.

Well then you'd better stop talking about it. :p

Anyway, this is a bit of a tangent.

Doesn't Finland have the highest rate of gun ownership in the world? But low crime?

Obviously seeing as handguns and illegal weapons are fairly easy to get a hold of (anecdotal) but gun crime is reasonably low, there is some other factor working to reduce gun crime. Harsh sentences? effective police? idk

Nobody really knows why. It could be that Australia just has low crime anyway, we always have and our crime rates have been dropping steadily for a while now.

It could be that the majority of illegal guns are own by crime gangs who arent likely to use it in something stupid like a service station robbery and then shoot an attendant but rather in defending against turf wars. Theres a big difference between organised crime and some crackhead shooting up a service station.

The sentences are pretty harsh, something like $250 000 fine and/or a 10year prison sentence for using an illegal handgun, maybe that deters people from using guns unless they really really need to, when it most cases a knife will do just as well [such as in robberies] and only give them 18months if they get caught.

Yes we do have a decent and effective police force, but that just ensures criminals are caught after the fact, doesnt actually prevent any crime from happening at the time. Its probably a combination of all of these factors or another factor we havent thought of.

at the end of the day gun laws only really restrict the people doing the right thing.

Yes but you also havent finished school yet so you havent heard much of anything yet have you? Do you know how to google? anyway here is your stats in an easy to read form, i am sure there are better sources out there than this though.

and yes Shroedinger, i understand that port arthur was the event that sparked the gun ban, i was being a smartass. The ban was completely political, only crazies would think port arthur was planned by the government, but it was a very convenient event that helped push through the gun ban. Legislation based on an emotional event rather than hard facts, what a kneejerk government we have.
hahyour being a bit of a bitch to someone who just wanted to make sure you werent talking out of your ass. dont take so much offence I just prefer to be skeptical to new facts than blindly beleiving all that the internet folks would like me to beleive

We don't need gun control we need bullet control.

If bullets cost $80.00 each will you can be sure that is somebody shot someone then he'd really hate the mofo and be extra careful.
