hi

i have an assessment in TWO days and im finding it impossible to argue in favour of this statement:
'hamlet is inadequate as a tragic hero'

But he has almost all the character traits of a tragic hero!!

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

Hamlet is a prince, not a king. The downfall of Lear is a greater 'Tragedy' than the downfall of Hamlet.

Hamlet starts in a state of 'madness'. However, this is not his tragic flaw (which can be regarded as indecision). Hence, he is a weaker character.

His death is not necessarily deserved. While appropriate, do we really find it necessary?

Some points to think on.

does it specifically tell you to argue in favour of that statement? If not, argue against it. It's almost impossible to argue against the fact that Hamlet is a "tragic hero", because afterall Hamlet was created to be a tragedy.

The tragic action is interrupted at various points. Examples:

The Gravediggers dialogue

The appearances of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (though obviously less funnier than their spin-off play)

The switching of the letter

The play within a play
