why is the answer D - bc of eddy currents? does A not affect the motion? what exactly does a stronger magnet entail - more field lines?

Sure A does affect the motion. However if the ends are not connected only small circular eddy currents are being formed in the copper wire.
As suggested by the above description they will only generate a weak force to oppose the motion of the pendulum, even if the magnetic field is stengthened.

However D allows a full current to flow through the copper wire from one end to another. The size of this current is much larger than the small eddy currents that form if you choose option A.

Hence D slows down the pendulum quicker than A
