is neone reading brave new world? if so share some of ur knowledge here and we'll help eachotha cuz I AM totally lost in this book, and anything additional wit comparative study with Blade runner would help too!

it's pretty easy, just read it once even if you're not overly sure what's going on, and then read it again. it's not a long book, nor is it particularly dense, and it's quite hilarious, so as long as you read it more than once you should be fine.

what are you having trouble with?

also: ha ha. campbelltown. i left that shithole nearly five years ago, and i ain't never going back.

Yeah, it isn't really that hard a book. It is enjoyable and thought-provoking. Remember that the scientific jargon (Such as hypnopaedia) is deliberate, and intended to alienate the responder from this dystopic construction, depicted as cold and sterile. [Besides, most of the character names are ironic references to famous revolutionaries, ie; Bernard Marx]/i]]

As for a means of going about creating notes;

Initially, it would probably be best to compare BR and BNW in terms of the dystopic cities at the centre of each text [Los Angeles and London], and ask yourself some of these questions; How are they represented? Why are they depicted as such? What message is being conveyed in this depicition?

Then, link this knowledge to the module of 'In The Wild' itself. Thematically, this largely concerns the relation between mankind and nature in each text, and as you've probably seen, nature is exploited and almost non-existent right? That is key to the topic, and you should understand the reasons behind this..

Each composer relates deep concerns about the state and future direction of their society, and this is presented via the dystopia. As such, both texts function as warnings in their own context, (BNW-1932, BR-1982) which heavily influences the particular fears being related. (BNW-Totalitarianism, Materialism, Excessive 'Progress', 'Fordism', BR-Environmental destruction, Artificial Intelligence). Try understanding how these themes are linked to the dominant element of man's relation to nature.

From here, try comparing these various aspects of both texts to each other and the rubric (See the syllabus at BoS) and that should give a good grounding for the topic. Hope that helps. :)

Of course, what is most important is the first step of reading the text itself. Out of 35 people in my Adv.classes, only 5 actually read BNW, with predictable results.

check out the notes on the main page i found them to be really helpful - lots of them have theme analysis, quotes...really good

I just got it now, although I'm in year 11. I'm up to chapter 5 and it seems pretty easy so far. Goodluck with it! :D

after reading the book for a while....i reckon its a bit too porno for a hsc book, i mean imagine if it was a movie? not that i'm complaining or nething :p, the books pretty cool and thought provoking if u can get through the scientific jargon :D

i didnt even notice the porno factor but my teacher said the book was banned from aus wen it first came out becoz of the sex n stuff.
n there was a movie made; and like most movies based on thought provoking books it was shithouse.
also, even tho the pseudo-scientific jargon makes perfect logical sense, ull miss part of the point if u understand it all.
