I'm kind of torn between doing a Liberal studies degree at sydney and B business admin/arts/psych at macquarie, can someone help me make up my mind? Liberal studies, basically because it puts off having to make up my mind about what I want to be for a few more months, potentially years...

But I like the whole internal transfers thing at Macquarie, and the fact that they have a good psych reputation.. and..

But sydney for the fact that i can do a language under liberal studies, and because i can do units in liberal studies that would count towards med radiation science or physio if i decided later that thats what i wanted to do.. and for its 'im going to sydney uni' factor (lame, i know, but its pretty!)

ew, hate making these big fat decisions where theres so much riding on it and so little to discriminate between the options..

You can do a language under any degree at MQ just have the pre-requisites/electives to do them, or do them as 'overloading' subjects (more than the normal which is 4 per semester) which my friend does (learning Japanese/French while doing a Media degree).

You seem to have this massive range of subjects you want to do, from liberal studies to med radiation science or physio, ever considered just doing an Arts degree?

For the pretty factor, you'll be sitting on shit wooden pews from a century ago for seats in lecture halls rofl. The campus is nice, but so is MQ there are pictures in the Pictures thread go check em out.

I love how universities always take pictures of their best lecture hall and portray it as if it is the standard across the university, when in fact most lecture halls are shit.

Haha yeah. A friend studied in Oxford for a semester, and she took a photo of one of her seminar rooms. It was exactly like the shitty Macquarie rooms like in W6B. :-/

their both equally good in their own way i fink u need to think about wat u want to do more. u say u dont want to commit yet theres a few diff things u though out there that u want to try. of course if u dont have an idea something like liberal studies or an arts degree will do u good but i fink some sort of more specific degree goes a long way for job prospects in the futre like i know a friend who did some sort of accoutning/arts double (not sure on specifics its at unsw i fink and i dont know much about it) and then dropped the arts wen he decided to commit to accoutning. u can do something like that too or drop accounting and transfer to the other course with the arts degree keeping ur opions open.

I think it's more important to get to a place where you know you can at least transfer into a variety of degrees you're interested in, as opposed to jumping to the one that you think offers better job prospects. Go for what you love and are good at... because unless you do something really stupid you will end up on the right path career-wise anyway.

So many people I know change their minds during uni. Even I changed my mind. Whilst macquarie has an awesome internal transfer program it means jack if you've locked yourself into a truly hardcore degree and can't get the GPA to transfer (in which case you might have to reapply via UAC). Hence why the "lowly" arts, humanities or social sciences degree is good... do easier subjects you enjoy and know you're good at, possibly even prerequisites for units you plan on taking up after you transfer, then when you've made up your mind transfer into whatever you like.

And in my opinion, Sydney has ONE pretty sandstone building, and that's it. Macquarie at least has a number of nicely refurbished lecture theatres with air conditioning and electronically-operated doors. If you're doing business units, you might even be lucky enough to get air-conditioned rooms for your tutorials. Now tell me, which sounds better

The Liberal studies is US style "4-year Arts degree". The BBA BA-Psy takes the same length of time and you'll finish with 2 degrees. It is also a lot more focused and should provide stronger career options.

As previous posters have noted, there is always the Arts degree to consider if you want a broad education. International business and International Studies degrees will also allow you to study languages.

Yeah I'd rather do liberal studies than straight arts, cause arts seems like its a bit pointless... (especially when I'm not the worlds biggest artsy subject fan.. and the 'picking things that I like so I'll be good at them' theory doesnt seem to apply to me, because I can pretty much get into & go well at anything & the things I dont like are because I'm doing badly at them -at school anyways-)

& I've been to both macquarie and sydney unis, so I know what they look like (mac several times, I was a tournament of minds kid, and syd only once for this years open day... but i went to a few lectures so I've seen that apart from the quads and the halls the lecture theatres are actually pretty crappy..)

In the end I think I'll let my UAI decide, and also where I'm gonig to be living next year. But thanks for the perspecives!

If you think Arts is a bit pointless, then Liberal Studies is probably not for you. When I looked into the B Liberal Studies at USYD (which was sometime ago now), it was a degree that required you to do a combination of "artsy" subjects, quantitative subjects and sciency subjects at various levels (sounds just like high school ay?).

I don't think an employer would consider it all that differently from a huamanities-based arts degree. A lot of Liberal studies grads go on to further post-grad study.

Yeah, he's about right, the difference being that with a straight arts degree YOU decide what your major is, whereas liberal studies will make you generic in x,y,z subjects.

As for "picking things I like" you might be rudely shocked at the difference between university study and high school study, so don't discount things as simply as that.

probably. but with liberal studies i get to decide on my arts major, and i get to decide on a science major (thus the it being 'better than straight arts' in my thinking, cause i can do science stuff aswell- i.e psychology.)

i guess thats the problem: i have no idea what its going to be like! maybe i should go sit in on some lectures ?? when does the uni semester end for the year?

If you want to do that, then do a B Arts-Psych or a B Sci-Psych, I dunno how 'science' they actually are, I always thought Psych was more of a in between. *shrugs*

(Oh btw, you can major in a science in an Arts degree as well).
