i need a course which will steer me towards becoming a netwrok security specialist.
you guys have noooooo clue how confusing the site is.
im going have to mention the 3 letters that no one here likes to hear.

(UTS: Bach of science in IT) they have the subjects needed, majors and all that on hand.
and thing like that for unsw

im thinking Comuter Engineering. how will it play out?
what atar do i need?
will my hsc subject screw me?
and what do i need to do to specalise.

okay sweet, how are you going in you're course so far? is it fun?
Personally I don't find anything fun about it, but it's not too bad. What sucks about it is that you will have to courses that don't have anything to do with you major so that will seem like a boring waste of time but it's like that at every uni.

Here's a warning though, if you choose Computer Science you will be required to do 3 maths courses in the first year (Assumed knowledge is Extension 1, you will have to do a bridging course in the summer) and you must pass all 3. If you choose Computer Engineering then you will be doing 2 maths courses and 2 physics course in first year (and whatever other core courses are required). Keep in mind that uni is nowhere as easy as highschool, so there's a few things you should take into consideration.

Have a look here:

I'm doing Computer Science at UNSW and my interests in year 12 was to also go into network security. I can tell you that you DO NOT want to pick computer science at UNSW. CS is a good course but it is not where as good for network security as UTS. I have friends who have similar interests and are doing UTS and USYD BScIT and I have to say most of them are fulfulling their interests. Especially BScIT at UTS, they have good network IT lecturers, good electives in regards to network security and practically no 3-4 unit maths. yet here I am struggling in CS course as the workload is alot, a lot of theory and mathematics in the first few years are of 4 unit HSC level and it's fair to say if you do 2 unit/okay in 3 unit, your workload (esp. in 1st yr) is going to be very, VERY heavy (i shit you not that you will bombarded with work you cannot postpone every single day). Computer Engineering is equally as good as BScIT at UTS for networks but imho from friends and word of mouth, BScIT is quite perfect.

Well yes, computer science is a branch of mathematics. If you want to mess around with modems and servers, don't do a bachelor of science.

okay, nice. my first choice was the Bach Science in IT at UTS, seems like a great course altogether.
how is it in general, what do you study? alot of theory?

You generally do a combination of business and IT subjects . The amount of there varies from topic to topic.

hmmmmm nerd, when do you pick your major and do you have elective spaces to pick in the 1st year?
Majors are chosen in second year, but with a double degree, you don't get to pick electives...
