Up until now I've thought that these two were the same thing, but after discovering the opposite i have a few questions, if anyone could help.

with raw marks, say hypothetically these are the "raw mark cutoffs":
English (Advanced) - 77/100
Chemistry - 72/100
Business Studies - 79/100

If i were to get a 73/100 raw mark in chemistry i would get over 90 as my HSC mark, and then this mark is scaled again (up) to get my ATAR?
According to the ATAR calculator a 90 HSC mark gives you a 97?
For some reason, this seems way too easy to get good marks... can anyone correct me? or elaborate please? :)

no, BOS aligns your raw mark and Uac also scales your raw mark.
but for the subects.. not too sure on the cut off. but someone here will hopefully get back at you

So the aligning done by BOS has no affect on the marks that UAC scales?

The UAC doesn't care about the cutoffs. They look at the performance of candidates in a course as if EVERYONE did that course. And compare the relative marks in other subjects. Its really quite complicated (the mathematics of it, not the concept). If you got HSC mark of 90 for chemistry you probably got quite good in the exam. It would scale up.

But, to get that 90 HSC mark in Chemistry, you would only need a 72/100(72%) in the actual exam since that's the band 6 cut-off? Right?

Well, if it happens that that IS the cutoff, then yes, your EXAM mark would be 90. This would be averaged with your assessment mark (derived from ranks) and your HSC final mark would be produced.

The HSC seems like it got a lot easier.
Anyone else to confirm? :)

UAC and BOS both use raw marks as the person said before, but you have been using an atar calculator which DO use aligned hsc marks so yes a 72/100 raw in chemistry does become ~97 atar equivalent. Might seem "easy" but you have to realise that only between 10-15% people are usually able to get 90+ hsc mark in chemistry so the scaling make sense. Chemistry does align and scale extremely well for a non extension subject though.
