It scales down since it is easy. If it was easy to get marks in easy subjects, then everyone would be taking advantage of the system.

I'm not sure, but in 2006 0.02% of people got a Band 6 and only like 3% got a band 5 compared to around 6% and 37% of Advanced (don't quote me for sure).

This is why you should never do standard!!

As I said, its scaling is exactly same as English (Advanced). It's a fair system based on the result from the 1st paper - Area of Study. If you read my previous post, it's not unfair at all. I would like to know your sources of information like I provided my sources of information.

Besides, if you were good at English and picked up English Standard, you are doing yourself a pretty stupid job as you limit yourself to English Standard, in that case, that's a disadvantage for them, not an advantage.

This is for the whole cohort right? Are individual marks somehow affected based on our performance in AOS?

Wow, I read through this and I'm pretty confused. =/

So what are the benefits of doing advanced or the benefits of doing standard if standard is easier and they are scaled the same?

My English marks aren't great, if I work hard I can get above average. (It's compulsory for us to do Advanced next year but I don't know about year 12)

Looking at the scaling report 2007 (sorry about the bad formatting):

English Standard HSC 32.8 5.0 47.0 42.0 38.0 36.0 33.5 30.0
scaled 17.7 7.8 47.2 37.5 28.0 22.7 17.2 12.0
English Advanced HSC 39.5 3.9 49.5 47.5 44.5 42.5 39.5 37.0
scaled 31.2 8.5 50.0 47.2 42.6 37.7 31.4 25.0

A mark of 47 scales up to 47.2 in English Standard but a mark of 47.5 scales down to 47.2 in English Advanced. Why is that?!

And lyounamu, if the scaling is the same why would anyone do English advanced on the basis of scaling aside from the fact that they enjoy English?

his already stated that some courses in uni NEED and REQUIRE adv or ext english. and some careers may need sophistocated eng eg journalist reporter etc etc.

But shouldn't Advanced students get a scaling advantage due to a harder course?

yes but only if u do well in advanced. if u do shit in advanced it would be better off doing standard e.g. a 75 in standard english would probably scale better than a 75 in advanced english

Why does the same mark scale better in standard, if it is easier to obtain that mark?

this is where the scaling and ranking comes in. if your on the BOTTOM of ADVANCED, i.e 75. then scaling does NOT apply to you.. scaling ONLY benefits people that are above average in the ranks because your school ranks would help you a big deal in the actual uai.

eg, rank 3 from school got a 75 in the ACTUAL HSC TEST. and rank 50 got 95 in the ACTUAL HSC TEST. rank 3 will TAKE the 95, whereas the rank 50 gets the 75. this is because the hsc is based on a WHOLE YEAR'S of work and not just ONE test. and it isnt fair if some guy that has bludged all year aces/flukes the test whereas the rank 3 tried hard all year but choked on the actual test.

a 75 in standard would then place you in the TOP half of the students, whereas the 75 in ADV places you in the LOWER half.

this is from my perspective that i have gathered info from my schools staff etc. =/

Oh, OK, so it's based on rankings as well as marks. Thanks. How much of it is ranking though, because isn't the final mark calculated on 50% school assessment and 50% HSC mark? And a part of the school assessment would be ranking or something...

your uai is 50 per cent school marks and 50 per cent hsc exam. the ranks you get in yr 12 refer to your school marks, and are pretty important, cos u cant just bludge all year til the hsc - if u have a crap rank and u blitz the exam u prob do worse than say someone with a good rank but didnt go so well in the external

Someone told me that doing advanced was going to be worth my while...although I still have my hesitations I'm sticking with it...

But whatever the decision, just make sure that it's comfortable for you.

GL!! XD
