I received an ATAR of 99.2 and I have been interested in studying arts law for some time now.
I applied for the EAS scheme and was accepted by all institutions.

I would love to study Bachelor of Int/Glob. Studies/Law at Sydney University, and I feel hopeful that my EAS could secure me a place.
However I have also applied for a merit scholarship at Macquarie University, for ATARs above 98.5.
I have been told I do have a chance of getting this scholarship as I meet much of the criteria, however I do understand how competitive scholarships can be. This particular scholarship is 12k for 5 years... i.e. a lot of money.

I need some advice as I would find the result of the scholarship around mid February. Preferences have to be in soon...
I am so unsure as what to put as my first preference.
If I get accepted to Usyd arts/law, can I still receive the Macquarie scholarship?

Thank you so much for your help!

What are your main interests in studying arts/law at USYD as opposed to MQ?

I can just about guarantee you you won't be able to study at USYD and recieve the MQ scholarship?

For the MQU scholarship, do you need to place MQU as your first preference?

I'd consider MACQ tbh, that is a lot of money and just going to USYD won't dictate whether or not you'll get your ideal grad job. In my opinion, if you're a good student you'll excel at either and your application wouldn't come down to the uni you attended.

Well who told you are a chance of getting the scholarship? Are they a reliable source?
And by "chance" what do you mean exactly? A 0.1% chance? An unlikely chance? A 50-50 chance? A likely chance? A near certain chance?

I am interested in continuing with French and I like the majors offered at Usyd. I know it may seem trivial but it appears that Usyd is more prestigious. It is also closer to home for me.
What do you mean you can almost guarantee I won't be able to study at Usyd?

I understand that. I am just confused as the result of the scholarship is revealed mid-late February. Preferences for main round offers have to be in very soon, and I'm just unsure whether or not I could still receive the scholarship whilst receiving an offer to Macquarie in a later round.

I think you need to first confirm your chances for the scholarship. If it wasn't close to 99% - I wouldn't put Macquarie down as first preference. I assume you have no specific preference towards MQ and the scholarship is the only thing impacting the decision between USYD and MQ. Here, I don't think many people would argue (or at least strongly) against Sydney Law being the 'better' law school in terms of academic rigor, your peers, industry links, exchange opportunities and your overall law school experience. Note that this does not mean every syd law student is a gun - I'm not entirely sure but I think last year MQ won some law competition against USYD because they are still a quality law school.

Prestige - irrelevant, Usyd is more prestigious because the general public (think a person on city rail to bondi) thinks its the top institution in NSW and doing law there automatically makes you 'smart and destined for success' (not necessarily true).

Assuming you get the MQ Scholarship and since you qualified for EAS, I will make another assumption - you need the scholarship money/it would significantly help your studies/take load off you during semester? If so, mate, I would go Macquarie. If you don't like it you can transfer into USYD in 2nd year if your marks are solid - a friend of mine did that and he is killing it at usyd right now (very bright guy).

I really have no clue personally what my chances are of receiving the scholarship. What I heard from a friend of a friend was that they knew someone who did similar extra-curricular activities to me and received an ATAR of 99.1 who received the merit scholarship.

I completely agree with your comments about Sydney Uni vs. MQ, you phrased it much better than I did.

My EAS was to do with a tumultuous family life, as opposed to economic struggle. Having to pay for uni and not receiving a scholarship would not drastically affect me, I would manage it like many other university students.

Thank you so much for your help, everyone. I apologise for being vague in my initial post, it was just all a bit confusing and daunting to me.
I think I will leave arts/law at Sydney as my first preference, and see what happens from there.

If that's the case, best of luck buddy and hope you get into arts/law at usyd :)
