Hey,

I am about to make my subject selections for Years 11 and 12 and I am wondering if I am making the right choices. I have chosen:

English Standard
Fundamentals of English ( Compulsory at my school if taking standard in yr 11)
SOR 1 ( I go to a catholic school )
Ancient History
Modern History
Business Studies
PDHPE
Biology

So all together I'm taking 14 units, however i will definitely be dropping fundamentals in year 12 and one more subject later on, bringing it down to 11 units.

I'm not sure what career I want to pursue exactly but I know that it is going to be around the areas of commerce, business or health (well one of those areas at least). I want to keep my options open and hopefully achieve an ATAR over 98, however i would be quite happy with a 95+

I would also like to know if you think that it is wise for me to do Ancient History, Modern History and Business Studies together. Should I do all three?

I thoroughly enjoy these subjects and I believe that I am capable of achieving good results in them. I also want to know about scaling and how these subjects measure with that. I know you shouldn't choose subjects based on scaling but I still would like to know how the subjects I want to do would be scaled.

My chosen year 10 electives :

Commerce, currently ranked 6/32 88%
Industrial Technology Multimedia, ranked 1/24 95%

Any answers and information about these subjects/scaling/ATAR etc would be greatly appreciated. :)

From what I recall, Business Studies doesn't really scale. You need to be getting marks at least in the high 80's for Business Studies

As for your other subjects, as long as you stay in the top 10 ranks, getting 95 ATAR shouldn't be too hard

It's going to be difficult for you to get your desired ATAR. Every single one of your subjects are low scaling, with the exception of Biology, SOR 1 and Modern History which are average scaling. You'll need to be coming in the top 3 for all of these courses, and first in all of them to even consider a 98. This also depends on your school rank - maybe you won't need to be as high up if you are in a top 100 school. Otherwise, rank is quite important. Because you asked about scaling, here's a review of your subject's individual scaling from best to worst;

Modern History (highest) -> SOR 1 -> Biology -> Ancient History -> PDHPE -> Business Studies -> English Standard (lowest)

If you're looking to do Commerce as a university option, you'll need to consider General Mathematics or 2 unit Mathematics. For some universities, 2 unit Mathematics is a prerequisite.

If you're looking to do Health, you'll need to consider Chemistry. It depends on what field of health you're interested in, but generally Chemistry is a prerequisite, assumed knowledge or highly recommended.

However, if you're looking at a Business degree, your subjects seem fine.

Doing Ancient, Modern and Business all together is very manageable, as long as you have the right work ethic!

Good luck! :D

Thanks for your answer :) I really do want that 98+ and i will work very hard to get it.

So are you saying it's still possible for a 95+ with these choices, but i need to be coming top 3 in all my subjects ?

You definitely need maths if you wish to compete in a commerce degree.

Yes, you'll need to be atleast in the top 3 for all of your subjects, definitely. But this all depends on your school rank. You can check it here; http://bettereducation.com.au/Results/Hsc.aspx . This website displays the top 200 schools by HSC results. If your school isn't there, you'll very definitely have to get in the top 3-2 for each subject for 90+ ATAR.
