Which person will get a higher UAI if person A and B gets these HSC marks?

Person A
english advanced 85
Maths EX1 85
Maths EX2 85
Physics 85
Chemistry 85

Person B
english advanced 95
General maths 95
Business Services 95
senior science 95
Food Technology 95

I just want to compare a person who gets all band 6 but does "low scaling" subjects to a person who get all band 5 with "high scaling subjects"

Who will achieve a higher UAI and HOW fair is the scaling system in this particular case?

This is an absolute guess, but I would assume that they would get the following marks:

Person A - 98

Person B - 99

But you need to remember that getting 95 in such courses like Business Services, English Advanced and even General Maths is pretty difficult.

maybe you should change adv to std english on person b
in either case i think person a will achieve a higher uai.

are these aligned marks, or percentile bands, if it were percentile bands i could estimate person a if u wish, except for phy i do sdd

Your 2003 UAI is: 97.65

But sdd scales like shit, so maybe 98/99

85 in english advance is very ordinary though, 50th percentile or something
and 85 in maths 3/4 is even worse

GO PERSON B!
is this you survivor?

The exact UAIs would depend on which year's scaling you used. Person B would probably receive a higher UAI than Person A in most cases, however.

You can't, really. You can't compare aligned marks between courses. Whilst Person A might have received 85 in every course, they certainly haven't performed at the same level in every course. A similar argument could be made for Person B.

The scaling system is as fair as it always is. :)

every years the scalings are almost the same for those subjects that are listed. e.g. Physics in 2001 are almost similar to 2002.

YES! Go person B!! person B deserves it, as he/she has reaches the highest possible performance band, whereas A didn't satisfied all the possible outcomes of the courses.

In this case, I agree, since B will get a higher UAI. But according to last year, HOW much differences does it make in terms of the UAI?

*sigh* When will you kids learn? :p

You've given us ALIGNED marks to work with. Yes, the scaled means have been similar from year to year! The distributions of aligned marks, and the band percentages and so on, haven't been! The equivalencies between aligned and scaled marks are EXTREMELY different between years. Compare 2001 marks with 2002 marks via the UAISeeker, for example (or do it manually yourself).

No - that's not why they deserve it... the UAI has nothing to do with achieving course outcomes. That's why all that crap about bands and standards and so on is completely discarded when it's calculated.

In 2002, there was no Business Services course.

If you used the 2001 scaling for that course only, and 2002 for the others, the difference would have only been around four points at most.

Just to add, that person that Survivor mentioned would probably get a UAI between 99.65 and 99.85
