Supplementary Texts For History & Memory

Hey everybody

Just wanting other people's thoughts on my choice of supplementary texts.

Module C: History and Memory

Text: Smithsonian Institute website: Bearing Witness to History 9/11

Supplementary Texts:

- Australians on the Western Front 1914-1918
- Australians on the Western Front 1914-1918 : Home

- Alexander: Director's Cut

Any thoughts/criticisms would be appreciated

hmmm website and website...? the WWI thing is good but is there another medium you could use? it's better to have different text types. They're fine as long as you can relate to history and memory.

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

My texts are 50th Gate, a holocaust documentary 'Into the Arms of Strangers' and a source on the invasion/colonisation of Australia.
Our teachers told us not to do fictional films because they are harder to link to th topic. And you also need to have at least one related away from the topic of your set text.

What have people got for a thesis in this module? I think mine is too complicated...

"In utilising a combination fo differing perspectives incorporating the iews of the powerful and the subjugated, individual and collective memories and changing historical interpretations, the representation of persons and events is made more reliable."

Any thoughts?

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

Im doing Denise Levertov's poetry; and i was wondering whether a photograph would be suitable for related material? Or do you think actual 'texts' are better?

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

some people are doing some holocaust art and diagrams etc. So i don't see why photographs wouldn't suffice.

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

would there be a serious problem with having two films as my related texts? are we supposed to have a different medium for each text?

We're studying the poetry of denise levertov in class, an I already have Forrest Gump as a related text, and wanted to do Life is Beautiful but ended up reading Huckleberry Finn instead, however i gave up on it a quarter of the way through because i couldn't stand the language the characters used.

:jedi:
my teacher strongly recommened that u dont have two of the same thing slike two films
because part of it is how representation (which includes medium) etc. affects meaning and u'll show greater understanding if u have two different ones..hope that made sense

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

Hey! i just found an article on smh.com on fromelles and how it is still significant to this couple as their relatives were involved, then it explains history so i think it'll be good..i was stuck and this is easy enough to analyse (better than a poem;) )
