What's the bus-system like in Canberra? Is it anything like Sydney? Can a bus get you most places you want to go or will I have to get a car?

They don't run as frequently as in Sydney, but pretty much. You'll find that if you're living on campus you'll very rarely need to catch a bus since everything is so close.

And when you do need a bus - they will take you pretty much anywhere.

The only transport I would recommend shelling out for is a bike.

Provided you live in the Inner North a bike will get you anywhere you need to go and if you need to travel to the satellite centres then the buses will serve you well.

Mum told me to take a bike, something about some 'most excellent bike tracks'. Do these actually exist?

Also, can you suggest anything worth taking that's not on the College "You Should Take" lists?

Bikes are very useful for getting around the big campus and getting to civic. Canberra does have a pretty good network of bike tracks, most of them are independant of roads and follow scenic routes through bushland and along creeks, but unless youre a cycling enthusiast then youll probably rarely use these, unless you live off campus.

Canberra (espeially the Inner North) is well served with bike tracks they are often more direct than the roads. They are also materially of good quality being sealed asphalt.

Bikes also have the advantage of evading the steep parking fees everywhere.

As far as a what to take list if you gave me an idea of whats already on the college list I could be of more help - otherwise I can always bang out an all inclusive 'you need' list.

Also, get your bike down in Canberra. Internationals and graduates all have them, and sell them cheaply when they leave. The colleges also have bike sales, I bought my bike for $20 at the start of the year and then flogged it off for $30 at the end of the year :). If you're self catered rice cookers are great, mine did me a world of good.

My top preferences are for catered colleges who ask you (me) to bring:

- Sheets, pillow-cases and a 'doovay'-cover
- Bike, and
- Money.

Which is not exactly helpful. What about posters or computers or TVs or Xbox's or suchsuch?

I suggest:

Clothes
Towels
Decorations miscellaneous
Personal effects
TV
X-box (if you're that way inclined)
Computer
2m cat5 cable
120Gb+ HDD
Bike (helmet and lock)
Stationary
A4 paper
Folders/etc
Yellow UHU-tack
Power boards (NOT double adapters)
Extension cords
Clock/radio
Coathangers
Resumes
Toiletries
Dictionary
Mug
Kettle
Coffee
Small medical kit - eg iodine, bandaids, paracetomol, ibuprofen
Washing powder
Iron

That should cover it for catered.

For Fenner drop the kettle for all self catered add:

Plates
Glasses
Utensils
Bowls
Saucepan
Wok (and wok chan) and/or frypan
Rice cooker
Microwavable containers
Food storage containers
Some food supplies

For Ursula college, you don't need a kettle.

Bar fridges can be rented from the colleges.

And you may want to bring a CD rack.

Thanks. Great help! But when you say Iron, I hope you mean BoS' very own one; he'd be a great help.

I've read the 2k6 guide, but they don't mention the price of renting the bar fridge. D'you know it? I'm thining about buying a cheap one.

Don't bother getting a bar fridge, all you'll use it for is beer, and that can go in communal fridges. I got mine for free at the end of the year from someone who was graduating, do the same!

There's no way I'm using a communal fridge. They'll steal my food! And my beer!

Wolfowitz: I do not know. What guide do you speak of?

I would argue that a communual fridge doesn't have enough room for the storage of alcohol and food - the ones at Fenner and B&G certainly didn't.....

I had another idea for the list:

Storage containers eg to keep 'stuf' in.
A laundry basket of some description would also be tidy - and impress the ladies...

At Bruce we have a normal size fridge to each floor, since it's catered we don't need to store much besides booze anyway. I left my laundry basket at my exes house, of all places.

Fenner and B&G had normal size fridges on every floor (two at Fenner) but they were pretty much full of food.

Did you do the ultimate chauvanistic bastard act and leave dirty washing for cleaning....

Yeah, but BG and Fenner are self catered.

Cleaning doesn't do washing (I wouldn't let them touch my clothing if they did :p). They come by once a week, empty your bin, vacuum and disrupt what you're doing. It's a cloaked room inspection.

I'm of the same opinion. It happens everywhere: work, school, home. Communal refridgeration doesn't work.

I refer to the 2006 Ursulla Hall handbook. It's on the Urs website; the main page.
