Our school uses Maths in focus, mainly because it's user friendly.

But I don't find that it's that bad to be honest though. Although I do tend to use Coroneos (3U Revised Edition, and 4U Edition + the supplyment) to fill in the gaps. Mainly it's the structuring of questions in the worked examples I like about Coroneos, it does it in a nice and logical manner.

I do have other books aswell like Terry Lee, Fitzpatrick and Cambridge.

From memory, for the prelim course, I think Maths in Focus doesn't really cover 3D trig very well. I think the 3U coroneos revised edition covers that quite nicely.

well up until like 2 weeks before the trials i relied on MIF and only dropped below 95% except for my first assesment task
which didnt end up counting for me cause i hadnt been at school for over a month cause i was basically dying.
i rate MIF

This. I think Maths in Focus is great for simplifying concepts and a summary. Dont rely on it for decent questions though. People should use a range of textbooks because they each have their own strength and weakness. Nothing beats past paper though.

I gotta argue against you on your opinion of Coroneos though. I friggin hate coroneos- the typeset is so shit. and the question difficulty is like an exponential curve. Theres no 'easing into the difficulty' there, and sometimes the language makes things out to be more complex than it really is.

Use Fitzpatrick James Ruse use it. Also Learn English, type like a human not a MySpace fag and learn that you're nowhere near top 2000 in the state in Maths. Just work hard and work ahead.

Ok, seems like I do need another textbook rather than MIF and i do feel it's kind of brief since the examples are quite dodgy. I also take all the advice from you guys like studying and spending more time even though it's a pain i got to do it right

I don't mind the typeset to be honest.

I admit the Ext 2 (4U) one is a bit hard to read. But the content is still good IMO.

I guess the reason I like Coroneos is because it treats all topics thoroughly, unlike MIF.

I just recently bought MIF and I've only used it once for the locus and I was a bit disappointed. My tutor told me to get it cos it was the best, I'm not sure yet. We have cambridge at school which is pretty hard but atleast it tells you when it is supposed to get harder eg practice easy ones then éxtension' then çhallenge'. But I never understand the notes in Cambridge - it would be impossible for me to actually LEARN first hand out of it. Coroneus is apparently good but I find the set out annoying too. I found this gem at my aunties - it's called New 2 unit Mathematics by Bullot, Gordon and Waitling. I've only used it for locus so far but it explained to me in one scentence what I had been looking for. I read half a page about locus in 1 minute and understood it finally. So I am in love with it for the moment. I think it is important for me to do heaps of easy ones before I do harder, exam type questions so ít is firmly in my brain and when I revise I do some more easy ones to make it really stick. If you know the process and understand it properly and its deep in your brain and it is second nature like algebra is now, then there's more of a chance you will be able to do the harder ones. Good luck... I would make sure you can do questions without referring to examples, understand how to get to a lot of formulas and do lots of questions and ask your teacher when you have a problem. I am always amazed at the simple mistakes I make and how easily my teacher explains it to me. If you really want - go to more math lectures or something. But if you are already studying heaps I would argue that you can't do much more and that you do have to have a good mathematical brain and not everyone can be a maths pro. Don't stress too much and focus on being a good all rounder for maximum uai.

LOL! The reason why I used Coroneos this week was because MIF didn't treat the topic well enough!

We were doing Parametric Locus at school this week, and basically the substitute teacher we had was referring to MIF's examples, and I basically had no clue what he was on about.

So I went home and looked it up in the 3U Coroneos Book. I worked through all the examples, and I made notes treating all aspects of the topic and in an hour or two I had an understanding of how to actually do things!

But many people do find the text and font annoying. But still I like it, it'd be too easy if it came in a nice book served on a plate!

My tutor told me to get it cos it was the best, I'm not sure yet.

Hmm... Based on why he/she told you that it was the best book, I'd be looking for a new tutor.

I would have to agree with you. My tutor ranked it last out of all maths textbooks.

Maths in focus is great 4 2U... for 3U it lacks.... however at times it is better than Fitz...plus it prob has the best layout/format.... they all have pros and cons...but its not as bad as people say it is...

I do the homework and I can apply it when i actually do the questions. But it's not enough to soak inside my brain so I guess i need more questions. Probably prelim pass papers or 1 more textbook. Keep tossing and turning from replies (Coroneos or Cambridge) 1 for better understanding and other more challenging questions?

I don't get tutoring anymore. I thought it would be best to do the homework and then if I need help I will get a tutor again. lol. I think she said the extension 1 MIF was good because it covered/revised some 2 unit stuff. She was actually a maths teacher as well. Perhaps she recommended it to me because I had missed a lot of class and did not really understand a few topics so the MIF because its not hard, is to learn out of rather than practise questions and do harder questions but rather for me to learn out of since that is impossible out of cambridge. I hate my school math teacher - she's mean, makes you feel bad if you can't do something easy and makes you stand in front of the class and interogates you on why you can't do it - it is so humiliating.
Yea my auntie used to be a maths sub teacher and she uses coroneus. I think i avoid it because the coroneus books she lent me are incredibly ancient and falling apart.

First off - it'd probably be in your best interest to study english to the contrary of maths.
That aside, maths, as said by numerous people on this thread is a 'practice makes perfect' subjects really concentrated on process and absolute correction - in comparison to most humanities.

The only advice i can give you is just if you cannot do something - for example the quadratic formula - continue to do it until you know it inside and out.

have u seen coroneos.... im not trying to dissuade u to buy it or anything BUT make sure u OPEN and take a look at it before u buy it
