im lost. I just got my marks back (18/24) and im not happy with it. Guys were pulling of 23/24 and i really want to do something like that. i know this doesn't come easy but i need a guide because my school is actual crap and especially because this new syllabus is bit weird without the area of study. So does anyone have any guides or ideas as to how to improve for English.

I DO STANDARD ENGLISH.

Write essays based on the syllabus and check out other essays and look at the way they structure theirs. In our school we use a tee box. So you would say something like the use of the technique within the line ''example'' positions the responder.

I did standard english as well and got a band 6. When I did stand eng I really wanted to stand out : ) For me, I like to improve and expand my vocabulary and I looked over many sample essays, then took time to write my own practice essays using words that made sense and stood out.

I think receiving teacher feedback is CRUCIAL. I was always so shy to ask for help, so I would email them rather than ask for help irl. Good Luck!

I think one thing to do when you read the text is to find a theme/idea that resonates with you. Of course your English teacher will probably talk about some overarching themes in class and you can write about that, but unless you truly understand and agree with those ideas, your essay is probably not going to be your best work. On the other hand, if you really agree with what you're writing, it'll make a huge difference.

Next thing is to write multiple drafts and get heaps of feedback. This is so important!!!!!!! I think of it like this, when you walk away from an argument and then you come up with all the possible things you could've said better, it's the same as essay writing. If you are struggling to express your ideas concisely and eloquently the first time, write your draft, let it sit for a few days, reread it and mark it yourself (90% of the time when I reread I'm legit like wth was I trying to say), and then rewrite it.

English is hard work. If you're willing to put in the work though, I'm certain you can easily do Advanced over Standard.

wow. so how much work did you put in for english every day/per week?
I didn't grind for english everyday, but yes I did try my best through simple steps.

I sat in front of the classroom and was always engaged in class discussions. I wrote essays beforehand and SENT IT TO MY TEACHER like 2 weeks prior to receive feedback (o dear lord how much i hated this because one time my essay was so mf bad my teacher gave me so much feedback/criticisms and i sat on gmail looking at the feedback & felt like a complete CLOWN......but my FINAL essay turned out so beautifully) . I always read my friends work and tried to integrate some of their ideas and they did as well with mine.

Its these simple things that add up in english that helps you at the very end:
- always listening in english class
- ten thousand drafts (draft 1, 2 , drafts AFTER assessment is returned with feedback etc) + getting ur teacher to look
- working with peers
- expanding vocabulary.

Goodluck!

I started doing this year 11, and my results weren't outstanding like I hoped (results were still good but I was expected high 80's - 100). So for year 12, I still used the same strategy but grinded even harder and it worked.. its different for everyone but this is my personal take on it.
