Heya, so how do all you other singers perform? Do you stand still on the stage and sing or do you put on a full performance like Pink?

Because I'm singing Ave Mary A and was just wondering how any of you would perform something like that.

Suggestions?

:)

Do you mean Ave Maria? xD

I'm not a singer myself, but if it's a sad, slow song, then I personally think it doesnt suit the piece if you sing like Pink, imho xD

But yeah. Hm.

Lol, no it's called Ave Mary A (not so coincidentally) by Pink lol. It's a pretty good song, it's on her new album.

But yeah I usually sing softer, slower songs by people like Jem but I want something different and even though I can sing in different styles I just don't know what to do with my movements! lol.

How do all you other singers perform? :)

It really depends on the song, my singing teacher is a theatre singer and he directs me sometimes and tells me what I am doing wrong. The answer really varies, I recently did my grade 8 singing exam and I stared at the examiner for the whole time, one song though was in English and it was a love song, it was really hard to sing to an old man about love so I ended up looking slightly above him.

Most of the time I will stand in one spot and shed these subtle yet dramatic facial expressions that I feel as I sing. I would also use my hands to gesture but I won't over do it. If I am doing something theatrical I will plan my movements, sometimes I pace but I make sure I do so with purpose, other times will sit then stand (but that is very rare).

Singing is very different to other instruments as it is just you and the audience, its not like piano where you have this big wooden thing to play!

Be truthful, honest and commit to what you're singing. Show your personality. Be brave, be free, try not to think about the notes you're singing but more of the message/theme/personal connection of/with the song. That way you're less likely to come across superficial.

In terms of body movement/facial expressions etc, there's no set criteria. Whatever you feel is right goes. Except, a word of warning, sing in front of people so they can tell you whether or not you look awkward on stage and gain some constructive criticisms.

Most of all, really enjoy yourself and let it flow naturally.

Well, I sing and play an instrument pretty much. So for 2 of my pieces (Love Song - Sarah Barrelies and Samson - Regina Spektor), I will be behind the piano and for my other 2 ("The Special Two" - Missy Higgins and "Zombie" The Cranberries )I will be playing guitar... I guess I can move around a bit with the guitar. Especially in Zombie coz I'll be with my band :)
