How important is prelim knowledge (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone, basically my prelim terms were absolute trash, i didn't really put in much effort i was heavily lazy and burnt out and dumb, but thankfully for year 12 im onto a good start (meaning im keeping up to date with work, obvi ik its only the start and it doesnt mean much lol but its somewhere) and i was wondering how important prelim knowledge is for hsc/Trials, also any tips would be helpful, thank you,

for the majority of subjects prelims dont matter unless its foundational knowledge that could help you understand the yr12 content. its not assessed in the hsc tho. i think there are a couple? or one that can assess yr 11 content in the hsc. i think maths is one of them

im doing standard math i dropped it at the end of year 11 but im not really struggling with learning content but im not too sure if prelim stuff will appear in hsc/trials

i dont do maths, so someone who has done it will have to confirm, i think yr 11 content is counted as assumed knowledge? so you could be assessed or it could be relevant to a question? in general i think all foundations of math are important to understanding the next stage?

I don't think they matter unless you're doing early entry? I failed chem + math prelims and nothing happened so I think it'll be okay but year 11 math does show up on your hsc trials and I think the actual hsc as well. Some year 11 content was on my trials but it wasn't too much. I'm sure you'll be okay! Just stay consistent as you're doing right now. Keeping up with your work is definitely important and make sure you are aware of your weaknesses and work on them once you catch them. Good luck with year 12 !

dw same I'm honestly terrible at chem but so is my whole class so I don't feel as bad got 71% for my trials but before that I got 60-68%. I'm actually worse at math since I failed it twice this year

Yeah rank is pretty important I was so surprised I got 71 for chem tho I didn't study like crazy, maybe a few hours a day (2-5 depending on how motivated I was) plus I did have work a few days a week and I would just test my memory at work which kinda counts as studying? Thats how I memorised a lot of formulas for math and chem.

For my trials I just took note of my weaknesses and constantly went over them. Practice papers really helped me do that, also feedback is always super great to look through. If I had any more tips I would say memorise key concepts and formulas for chem (equilibrium, stoichiometry), understand what the question wants you to do (analyse, compare, etc). We were asked to compare two theories in trials so definitely remember a short summary for all relevant theories just in case. I made so many silly mistakes so I always focus on the basics too (like atomic structures and balancing Chem equations). Really become familiar with your syllabus and even look through your textbook, I remember we had to explain the process of removing toxins in food by Aboriginal people and I completely forgot I would have similar tips for bio and math. It's not too bad once you get the hang of it. You'll do great I'm sure !

You should at least try to know your very basic foundations for biology and chemistry (think like module 1 basics, since everything is interconnected in some way in science and whatnot) but they're not going to actually SPECIFICALLY test you on preliminary knowledge I believe! So either way you're fine

the year 12 chem course just builds on the y11 knowledge, the moles and problem solving skills are important to know. i think its important to know the mod 3 and 4 stuff before you start year 12. in bio, the year 11 stuff is assumed knowledge, you aren't really directly tested on it. the key concepts like osmosis/diffusion and stuff are good to know. i think i had one question in my trial about that sort of asked about year 11 content.
