for those who currently work, how is ur wage determined?
if i was to gain casual employment now, would i have to individually/collectively get into some type of bargaining process with my employer? what can unions do in this?

ok, if you work for a large outlet, or one with chains and a number of stores, then the company will usually have negotiations with the union. e.g. the sda, which basically covers most retail employees and negotiates with many companies.
Otherwise, the company will either pay you an award wage, or a pre-determined amount. As a casual, you really don't have much of a say unless they offer to discuss the pay with you.
well at least that's from my experience, someone please correct me if i'm wrong.
