Bulge brackets and top tier boutiques are primarily very tough working environments. That said it can give you more options if you do your time there.

There're other jobs in the same/similar field that pay similar, but work a lot less. And you can always go back to these bulge brackets in a cruisier role later. The sweet spot is probably as AD/VP.

There are some exotic jobs here and there.

But more importantly, young kids only ever think about Goldman Sachs M&A and KKR.

Reality is there are hundreds of these firms that do similar things, don't work as hard, and pay marginally less if not as much.

And there are also exotic jobs within the big ibanks you think of too. Eg a while ago I dealt with a resources principal investing group that specialised in a particular sector within one of the big ibanks. While everyone is busy getting jobs in their M&A team pitching and marketing til 2am every night, the guys in this principal investing team make 1-2 investments every few years, and spend most of their time managing the asset. They knock off every day at 5 or 6pm. Get paid more than the average ibanker at the same level. And actually learn more.

Not sure if srs, got a good laugh out of it either way.

“The goal is for our analysts to want to be here for a career,” David Solomon, Goldman’s co-head of investment banking, said in an e-mailed statement. “We want them to be challenged, but also to operate at a pace where they’re going to stay here and learn important skills that are going to stick. This is a marathon, not a sprint.”
