For a question like this, how much working out should i show, if i can do it in this many steps? its 3 marks by the way

I would recommend you to show one more step:

Showing the integral in the form 1/(a^2+x^2) before integrating.

Just do it in 2 steps (or even one step) if you're confident.

In the HSC, if you wrote down the correct answer with no working out, you would get full marks.

Otherwise, if you get even the tiniest thing wrong, you get 0.

In the marker's comments it says that an answer alone may not receive full marks. Or is this for specific questions?

I think it's fine for the integration questions which you can do be inspection
