i'm in first year and my courses 4years long

so say if i go on to oversea as exchange student for a year

when i'm back will i be in third year or second year?

Uhhh it should be exactly the same as if you were still studying here, because units you study o/s will still be credited.
If i remember correctly, you need a credit avg before you can apply, and you can start doing it after first year.

It depends on what course you are doing, and which uni you go to overseas. You can generally get credit for what you study over there, however you may not get credit for everything, ie. a year overseas may not equal a year in your course at usyd, so you may have to catch up on a couple of subjects.

I would look into your particular course and the requirements for exchanges etc.
