dont become a doctor, choose it or something else. Its lotsa hard work and sacrifice for about 12-13 years from year 1 med school till specialist qualifications.

Finished 6 years med school, 2 years basic, and 5 years more training left, still earning less than a nurse my age..
hsc 2006?

Haha same aye. I eat pain for breakfast every morning.
lol yeh if i wasn't on a cadetship for engineering, i would seriously have sat the umat, and went for med after realising that they have it easier than us (my atar would mean i would need only like a 70th percentile).

umat is involved in the final selection process, it isn't just a cutoff

and where can you get an interview with a UMAT of 70th percentile? are you talking about at UNSW? you would need an ATAR of like 99.95 plus an extremely good interview (as in top 5%) to even stand a chance. for med it's not just about meeting the cutoffs. the cutoff ATAR at UNSW for med is 90, but in reality the average ATAR is 99.7-99.8. no other unis will offer you an interview at 70th percentile unless you were rural.

WOW!!! Dosu ur making it seem sooo hard to get into med that it is very detering, i know one guy with 91 Atar who got into UNSW and i read the UAC stuff and said u need a minimum of 96 ATAR to be considered (not rural). And ur in Medicine!!! u have my admiration buddy :) ... if it's not too personal and that is if and only if, what uni are u going to? What subjects in high school did u do? How was ur interview were u shaky or confident? how much did u study for the umat? wat did u get and wat was ur ATAR? i really want to know so i can u know... try to have something to aim for =] thnx

It is really difficult to get in, yes it is. If he got 91, that probably means he was rural. It is otherwise, SOOOO difficult to really get in with an atar below 99. You would have to smash UMAT and the Interview without 99 in most uni's
And still that 70th percentile in umat isnt as easy as it sounds, its a bloody hard exam. And on average you would need atleast 90% + in umat.

Yep he sure was rural and so am i ... Never loved the country as much as i luv it now lol. Hey any ideas if i apply for rural wat atar and umat i need to get? Also i really want to know why is everyone only talking about UNSW theres also USyd, Macquire and EVEN Newcastle and maybe ANU, not 100% sure they got med... there are other unis or is UNSW the best uni for medicine??? Tell me wat u think; is it their course structure or just the prestige of going to UNSW that drives people to go there?

Yeah alright, your chances are ALOT higher now :)
Macquire doesnt offer bachelors of medicine lol.
UNSW medicine, along side Sydney and Monash are said to be the most prestigious uni's in australia. Thats why they are most frequently talked about. They also the favourite to apply for, for students that have ATARS but average umat.
Newcastle, no matter what atar you get, say 99.95, you will not be offered an interview unless you reach the cut off for umat, which is usually around 90% +, which is difficult.
Not sure about what scores you need as a rural applicant, sorry though.

I wonder if HSC 2010 city people can just move to a rural school (between now and the HSC exams), get between 91 to 96 ATAR and then get considered for med. :p
haha... unfortunately you have to have lived/gone to school in a rural area for 5+ years.

its actually Melbourne, Monash and UNSW. Sydney is a good uni, but in terms of medical teaching it has lagged behind despite being the oldest uni to offer medicine.

zzzz. monash have a umat cutoff of around 91 percentile. i.e. u need to get in the top 9% or else u cant get an interview = no chance (even if u get 99.95).

do u even do medicine?

Newcastle is 175 umat which is 86%, but it seems to be dropping each year.

Med is harder to get into then engineering.
Engineering is most probably harder in the first 2 years then med. Med can get hard in later years (correct me if im wrong) apparently some people work 80 hours a week sometimes. In the end you have your respective career and it is up to your own individual effort, who cares if your course is harder or if you went to unsw or csu or if your course required X umat. In the end its up to you.

I really love how the *not jealous* engo kids come on a 'how to get into medicine' thread and talk about how easy it is. I would like to see what their umat scores were if they attempted it, and if they didn't they should give it a go to prove how awesome they are maybe., or throw them in and interview and see how they fare.
I think it's a pretty silly thing to say that engineering students are just jealous of their med counterparts. While it is a bit annoying that they feel the need to constantly bring up the pressures of their courses I'm sure really they are just proud of their achievements and like people to know it.
