Is submitting your work online electronically a scare tactic or can they really detect plagiarism with high accuracy?
Has anyone gotten away with it?

- The electronic software like Turnitin does definitely work,
- in written assignments like essays, it is generally very easy for a marker to sniff out plagiarism,
- if you get caught plagiarising at uni, the staff members will generally tell their colleagues.

the programs unis use to detect plagiarism is extremely accurate. it's not worth even trying. be careful of excessive quotations and paraphrasing without referencing, because it will pick up on that too.

Even if the computer programmes don't actually work as well as they say, and I would bet that they do, any tutor marking an essay will probably have read all the main texts on it as well as everyone else's essays, so they stand a good chance of picking you out for it by themselves.
